The Red Cross is known for being there to help when there is a natural disaster or problem anywhere in the world. And apparently they are also experts at knowing how to entice women to come to the rescue and help their fundraising efforts—and it involves designer handbags.

Some were new and some were gently used and all were donated by individuals, stores and even celebrities. Bags from Kathie Lee Gifford, Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb, Natalie Morales and Jenna Wolfe from NBC's Today Show; Former Miss America Phyllis George; actress Cybill Shepherd and Ivanka Trump were up for grabs to the highest bidder.

Stubborn Fat Is History With Zeltiq

It's so unfair! Your alarm goes off every morning at 5am so you can hit the gym before work, you carefully watch every morsel that goes into your mouth, and yet you still have those saddle bags or a muffin top that undermine your confidence in clothes and a bathing suit.

Most of us would prefer to not have to go under the knife no matter how much we hate those areas of stubborn fat, so we certainly welcome a cool change that has arrived on the beauty scene.

Denise West, Cosmetic Consultant for the practice and their companion Rockledge Medspa, answered BeautyInDC.com's question about the procedure and shares her own experience:

Q: What is Zeltiq and when was it introduced?

A: Zeltiq was founded by a group of Harvard Scientist’s and the FDA approved it in September 2010. It is a unique, patented, clinically proven procedure that involves freezing fat cells without damage to your skin. There’s no knife. No suction hoses. No needles. No lasers, even. After your treatment, you get on with your busy day.

Q: Who is a good candidate for the procedure?

A: The best candidates for the Zeltiq CoolSculpting procedure are people near their ideal body weight who eat well and exercise regularly and have pockets of fat that have not responded to a healthy lifestyle. They are seeking long-lasting spot reduction for this specific area of fat, but they are not considering a surgical procedure with its inherent expense, downtime, and safety risks.

Q: What happens during a treatment? Does it hurt or cause discomfort? Any downtime?

A: Zeltiq gently cools unwanted fat cells in the body through a process called Cryolipolysis to induce a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells. There is no pain or discomfort caused with the procedure. At the beginning of the procedure you will feel a firm tug or pulling sensation along with some intense cold. This soon dissipates and you are free to read a book, work on your laptop or even take a nap. Typically you will see a reduction of fat after only one treatment.

Falling for the Season's Trends

If you don't like to plan ahead that's ok because there are dozens upon dozens of fashion industry stylists, makeup artists, etc who will do it for you. They usually stay a few seasons ahead so when fall fashions for 2011 were being shown months ago we were also getting a glimpse into the future regarding makeup.

Have Your Spa-Tini and Drink it Too!

Leading a healthy (and lo-cal) lifestyle used to mean sacrificing cocktail hour. When you're counting calories it's difficult to justify a couple of Cosmopolitans at about 220 calories a pop--if you can even stop at just two!

The Mortons www.mortons.com restaurant chain must have overheard some of their calorie conscious customers voicing their dismay at having to give up their martinis. Last Thursday they launched their collection of less than 200 calories cocktails called Spa-Tinis. Judging from the crowd that turned out on the patio of the Georgetown Mortons for the introduction, it seems many customers (mostly women) have been craving the opportunity to enjoy an work drink and fit into their skinny jeans too!

Each Spa-Tini is made with natural ingredients that minimize the sugar traditionally found in popular drinks. Ingredients like Skyyblood orange vodka, Patron Silver and Absolute acai vodka make up the 5 versions. My favorite turned out to be the Red Velvet which is created with Lindemans framboise lambic, Lunetta prosecco and Chambord. The prosecco balanced out the sweeter tasting ingredients and added a refreshing finish to the cocktail.

The cocktail collection is available at all six area Mortons locations but of course all of those special liquors and ingredients don't add up to a skinny price. The Spa-Tinis are $14 each but you'll have your martini specially blended just for you by one of their experienced bartenders.

Summer Makeup That Beats the Heat

The official arrival of summer on June 21st is a signal that we're probably in for many 90 plus degree days for the next few months. That makes it very difficult to look freshly made up over the course of the day especially when you add in DC's humidity.

Waterproof makeup can be a lifesaver --not only for everyday but also at the beach if your days of going barefaced are a thing of the past. And you would probably prefer to do it without the possibility of black streaks running down your face!

There have traditionally been a lot of choices for waterproof mascara but not necessarily other makeup products. Luckily there are now lots of options for having your makeup stay in place through even the most challenging heat and humidity.

If you don't like to go out without filling in your eyebrows but are worried about how they'll look after a dip in the pool there is a great product to keep them in place. Make Up Forever makes a Waterproof Eyebrow Corrector cream which will fill in and define all while staying in place through water and heat. It does come in a variety of shades and is available exclusively at Sephora for $19.

If you have skin imperfections you would rather not show off there waterproof concealers that will offer the kind of coverage you're looking for in summertime conditions. One of the most touted is by Amazing Cosmetics. Their Amazing Concealer is a full coverage concealer and is considered a "magic eraser" for dark circles, broken capillaries or anything that needs covering. It comes in 10 shades and at $42 is a bit pricey but you only need the smallest amount to do the job. It's available at Sephora.

A: IPL/Photo Facials/Skin Rejuvenation all do the same thing. The goal of the treatment is to give the client an even skin tone. The machine produce a shot of pulsed laser light on to the skin or the area being treated. The client may chose to apply numbing cream 30mins prior to the treatment to minimize any discomfort. Normally, when the pulsed laser light is shot on the skin, it feels like a rubber band sting.

Q: WILL THERE BE ANY DOWNTIME AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

A: This is the best part of IPL photo facials- No down time! You can come in on your lunch hour, have the treatment done and return to work with little or no side effects to worry about. The most important thing to do is apply SPF.

Q: WILL THERE BE AN IMPROVEMENT IN THE SKIN AFTER JUST ONE TREATMENT AN HOW MANY DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE?

A: Most clients say their skin feels tight immediately after the treatment. If they are being treated for the sun spots/brown age spots, the spots will immediately become darker and then over a period of 3-5 days start to flake off and become lighter. An average client may take up to 5 treatments to see the end result. The end result typically depends on how the client's skin reacts at each treatment and how much their skin can tolerate and also how bad the condition is that is being treated. Q: WHO PERFORMS THE TREATMENTS?

A: A Registered Nurse, A Master Esthetician or a Medical Doctor can all perform the treatments.

Q: HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

A: It depends on variables. Is the client following with proper after care? Is he/she using sunscreen, are they keeping up with the treatment as recommended? Typically after 5 treatments, we would ask the client to start maintenance treatments. But if the condition requires more than 5 treatments, they would continue to do so.

Q: WHAT IS THE AVERAGE COST OF THE TREATMENT?

Straight Answers About Keratin Treatments

Washington's wilting humidity is about to descend on the area and that means our hair is about to develop a mind of it's own. Those with especially wavy or frizzy hair feel the pain year round. And that's one of the reasons the Brazillian keratin treatment, also known as the "Brazillian Blowout" has gained such a faithful and satisfied following. The treatment makes unmanageable hair behave by straightening and smoothing the strands for up to 4 months.

Some recent news reports have questioned the safety of keratin treatments because some of the hair-smoothing products contain formaldehyde - a chemical the Environmental Protection Agency considers a carcinogen. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, recommended stylists stop using products with formaldehyde, which goes by a number of different names. Formaldehyde is a natural occurring substance found in everything from produce to cosmetics. OSHA has set safety guidelines for this and Marcia falls well below these limits.

Treatments without formaldehyde do straighten and smooth but not to the extent that the others do. Also, the effects are not as long lasting.

I believe that the products in question are to date available in the U.S. but have been banned in Europe. Clients interested in having a keratin treatment should research and ask their salon for an MSDS sheet which lists all the ingredients and their levels. Being informed is the best way to achieve beautiful, silky and healthy hair."

It seems like a genius invented this product since we certainly want to avoid stubble when we're showing off our legs in the warmer months. And the under $3 price is amazing!

A: This laser is different from other lasers for a few reasons. It uses a 810 nm wavelength which is the most specific wavelength to target hair pigment. The suction device also improves the efficacy of the laser because it blanches any competing pigments in the the skin and brings the hair follicles closer to the laser.

Q: Who is a good candidate for laser hair removal with this system?

A: The laser can be used on more skin types than the majority of lasers currently in use. We can treat skin types I-IV. This includes very fair skin, European skin types, Hispanic, and East and South Asian Skin types. Although the Duet has been used in clinical trials on darker skin types (African Americas), our providers’ personal experiences with this laser have shown that some undesirable pigment disturbances have occurred with the Light Sheer, so we still treat darker skin with a Yag laser which has been very safe and effective. All hair lasers work by targeting brown pigment so none of the hair lasers can treat blond or white hairs because they lack pigment.

Q: How many sessions will it take for some of the most popular treatments like underarms, legs, bikini and back?

A: For underarms, bikini, arms, legs and back most patients will need an average of 6-8 treatments to achieve 80-90% reduction. Facial hair can require more treatments depending on ethnic background, genetics and hormonal factors.

Q: Are there any risks or side effects with this laser?

A: The Duet has very few side effects. There can be temporary redness, swelling, or discoloration of the treated areas.

Q: Is the hair removal permanent or will it require touch ups later on?

A: With enough treatments, the hair removal will be permanent. With every treatment, the patient has a permanent reduction in the amount of hairs, the coarseness of the hairs, and the rate that it re-grows. For all these reasons, this is a great option for people who are prone to ingrown hairs, “hair bumps” and discoloration from shaving, tweezing, and waxing. Recently we have seen a great increase in the number of male patients who are choosing laser hair removal of their facial hair as an alternative to daily shaving.

Beauty Resolutions I Can Keep

They say the best way to sabotage your resolutions for the new year is to make them difficult to keep. If you try to change too much you may be setting yourself up for failure. So I thought about the really simple things I could do that would have the most impact. Here are some ideas that might lay the groundwork for your health, beauty and well being in 2011!

1) Wash my face every single night before I go to sleep.

We are all guilty of going to sleep with our makeup on sometimes...we've had a long day and are just too tired to properly cleanse our faces. This year I'm going to make an effort to do it no matter what so I'll make it easy by keeping a great cleanser nearby...I'll also keep some of those easy face wipes near my bed so there is absolutely no excuse. There are some inexpensive and effective ones at your local drug store by Neutrogena, Lumene and Garnier Fructis. And this resolution also leads to another we are hearing more and more about regarding our health, weight and the way we look--I'll do my best to get 8 hours of sleep a night!

2) I'll drink more water.

I read that we should calculate half of our body weight and drink that many ounces of water a day to keep our bodies hydrated. It's so incredibly simple and has so many benefits on our skin, metabolism and energy level. Straight water gets boring so I usually add some lemon or a splash of flavored Vitamin Water or juice to make it more palatable...but be careful as there is a lot of sugar in juice so try to keep it as pure as possible.

3) I'll have my eyebrows professionally done.

Whether they are unruly and need to be waxed or are sparse and need to be tinted, getting your eyebrows done professionally makes a huge difference. Sure we can all pluck them and fill them in with pencil but it's hard to duplicate the polished lookwe get from a pro. It's a relatively inexpensive service that can have a lot of impact on your looks!

4) I'll throw away old makeup.

Have you hung on to old lipsticks and eyeshadows thinking you'll use them someday? I used to think that makeup could last for years but the pros say that certain products have a short shelf life and are a breeding ground for germs, especially the ones that come into contact with our eyes and lips. Mascara probably had the shortest window of time for use and you should throw it away after 3 months, period. Foundation can last up to a year if you keep fingers away from the bottle and use a sponge to apply. Eye pencils can last longer if you sharpen before each use and powders, concealers and lip balms can actually last a few years since they don't contain water. Check to make sure nothing has a bad odor or has changed color or consistency. Oh and well we're at it let's make it a habit to clean our makeup brushes on a regular basis too. Sally Beauty sells a cleaner by Face Secrets under $6 and Sephora has a product in their own collection for $6 that you can use daily. Not only will they rid your brushes of bacteria but they'll extend the life of your brushes at the same time so they're a good investment.

5) I'll use a sunscreen daily.

We hear it constantly--if we want to protect against skin cancer and aging we have to use a sunscreen with at least a 15 spf, even if we are just exposed to the sun for short periods of time. So many of the moisturizers out there in all price points do include an spf so choose the best one for your skin type and apply more often if you exercise outdoors or will be sweating. And don't forget your lips--a lip balm with spf is a good idea too as our lips are also vulnerable to the suns damaging rays.

6) I'll pamper myself more.

This might be the easiest resolution to keep! Taking the time out for a massage, facial or mani-pedi keeps us sane when things get really stressful and out of control. So be good to yourself and it will probably pay off in the way you look and feel!

Based on the weather so far this November and December we might be in for a frigid winter in the Washington area even if we don't get the "snowmeggedon" of last winter.

The freezing temps and cold wind takes it's toll on our skin, lips and hair and you might already be feeling like your skin is dry and flaky, your lips are parched and your hair is brittle and flyaway.

You'll probably have to step up your beauty routine and bring in the "big guns" so to speak to give them extra attention.

Our lips are extremely delicate under the best of circumstances but they are very hard to protect or cover up in winter. A simple lip balm in a stick may not be up to the task. And the same principle of exfoliation applies here too. The beauty of Ole Henriksen's African Red Tea Exfoliating Lip Salvation ($15) is that it multi-tasks to provide both of these treatments in one. Apparently red tea offers even more anti-oxidants than green or black tea so you're getting all of that protection as well as the hydrating properties of the product. Your hair may be reacting to the drastic change in temperatures from outside to inside and it might be static and flyaway in addition to being brittle. When I first visited Pureskin, LLC www.pureskingbethesda.com in Bethesda I was struck by the futuristic looking equipment in one of the tranquil treatment rooms. The name is also very exotic sounding --the Far Infrared SlimDome Sauna.

After speaking to owner Amy Boyce I know that this equipment may be the answer to the overeating, drinking and generally unhealthy things we may be doing during the holidays or have been doing all year long. SlimDome sauna is a very sophisticated method of deep detoxification for a wide array of conditions. It is helpful for clients dealing with mercury toxicity and post radiation issues to those just looking for improved health and well being. New Face Creams Up The Ante On Results

Most creams these days are multi-tasking and not only address wrinkles but also treat aging skin issues like texture, hyper pigmentation and sagging. They come in a wide range of price points depending on whether you are buying them in the drugstore, department store or from your dermatologist. Some of the key ingredients you’ll want to look for are retinol, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides and hydroxy acids. BeautyInDC.com found some of the newest and most effective creams on the market if you’re looking for youth in a jar!

Least Expensive

One of the reviews for this first product said “bye bye Crème de la Mer” which goes for about forty times the price of St. Ive’s Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer. At $5.99 a jar it offers collagen and elastin proteins to smooth wrinkles and soften skin and is a great price point and something you would find at your local drug store.

You might forget about Avon since it’s mostly available through a consultant or online but their skin products are amazingly affordable and they are always coming out with new products. Their Anew Clinical Derma-Full Facial Filling Cream is called their first injectible grade facial filler in a cream and addresses some of the same issues that dermal filler injections correct like filling in facial contours and restoring fullness and they do it with Hyaluronic Acid. Cost is $34.00.

Mid-Range Price

Clinique is a department store brand that has a product with some amazing claims—they say at 12 weeks of use the anti wrinkle results of their Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle and UV Damage Corrector will be close to what you would see after a laser treatment at the dermatologist office. The ingredients include Vitamins C and E to fight free radicals and some collagen building peptides. Cost is about $44.00.

There are products called cosmeceuticals, a cosmetic product with implied pharmaceutical benefits and they are usually sold at dermatologist and plastic surgeon offices. NeoCutis is a popular brand and a product they introduced in July is part of a hot trend in face creams to create younger looking skin by diminishing dark spots from sun and age damage and improve the skin’s brightness. Most products do that with hydroquinone but they have a have a patent pending ingredient called Melaplex in their Perle Skin Brightening Cream. It costs about $95.00

Q: What are some of the benefits?

A: Blood circulation will be better making your body more flexible. Your body and mind will be balanced and muscle pain will be released. It improves bad posture from sitting too long and standing too long. People with cancer , diabetes and heart problems are recommended to see a doctor before getting the massage.

Q: What kind of feedback do you get from your clients?

A: After getting Thai massage for the first session most clients have some soreness from the massage but not everyone will be sore. It depends on the condition of clients. A few days after getting a Thai massage they will know that many things in the body have changed for the better than before getting Thai massage and they keep coming back to get a regular Thai massage once a month.

It hit Stephanie Dolgoff at some point that she was no longer the young, desirable chick she had always been. This shocking revelation led to humorous observations on her blog www.formerlyhot.com about aging, body image and beauty.

The blog has now evolved into a book, Formerly Hot, Dispatches From Just the Other Side of Young that is now in book stores and on Amazon.com.

She was recently interviewed by BeautyInDC.com about her book and musings on her favorite subjects:

Q: Stephanie can you tell us about your background and how you became a writer?

A: I've been writing ever since my last month of college. I'd never written more than a term paper, but I was so frustrated by the pressure I felt to figure out what I was going to be for the rest of my life that I just sat down and ranted on paper about "shoulds," self-imposed and otherwise, and after that you couldn't stop me from writing. I worked at various magazines as an assistant and wrote and edited, and that's what I've been doing for the past 20 years. Wow. Weird to say "past 20 years" and have it not feel like that long, but there you have it. I'm one of those people who loves to write--it's not hard for me. It's hard for me not to.

Q: How would you describe your book Formerly Hot?

A: The book is all about what happened when I realized I wasn't a young woman anymore, moved without my permission into a new category of human being, and all that I've come to realize since then. It covers all aspects of a woman's life--friends, marriage, work, health, marriage, pop culture. It's humorous essays.

The inspiration came from simply feeling like I wasn't myself, that something had changed, and I couldn't put my finger on what it was. I had everything I wanted (good job, two beautiful girls, a husband, friends, health, etc.) but something felt unsettled. I was in my late 30s, and decided it was because I was aging--I wasn't perceived as "the hot chick" anymore, as I had been, for better or worse (mostly better) my whole life. So I jokingly started my blog, http://www.formerlyhot.com. I didn't know what I was, but I knew what I wasn't: hot, in that first-glance, young-woman kind of way.

Quickly, though, it became clear that it wasn't about looks at all, but about slipping into this new category of woman--the not-young woman--and that my self-definition had a bit of catching up to do. What I learned through the blog and writing the book, though, is that life on this side of young is far more fulfilling and enjoyable than back when I was "hot" in the way most people use the word. Being an adult tween (not young, not old) can be awkward at times. But I wouldn't trade where I am now to be a young woman again for anything.

Q: What feedback have you gotten from people who have read the book?

A: The most common thing I hear is, "Thanks for voicing what was in my head--I thought I was the only one." I also hear a lot of "Thanks for helping me laugh at myself and getting older." That's extremely gratifying. Women are taught to fear getting older, and what I hope my book does is helps them see that they don't have to. There's some loss that comes with not being young anymore, of course. But there's so much more to be gained. That's what the book is about.

Q: You write a lot about body image--what words of encouragement can you offer to a woman who is struggling with their body size or shape?

A: There are a lot of people who stand to make a lot of money by telling you that you're not OK the way you are. I had an eating disorder when I was young and have always had issues with my weight, even when it was perfectly fine. What I've learned that works for me is to eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full, and to try to be as healthy as I can. The weight my body settles at when I do that is what it should be. It may not be what I want it to be, but it's what it should be, and accepting that has made life a lot easier.

If you're heavy and worried about your health, by all means, do what it takes to get healthy. That's worth your energy. And if you think a little bit of this or that will help you feel prettier, why not avail yourself of it. But for the most part, I'd look for evidence in the mirror and from those who love you of what is beautiful about you, rather than focus on what you don't think is. It's not easy to deprogram yourself to think that way, but it can be done.

DC Twist On A New York Fashion Event

A Doctor With an Eye 4 Beauty

One of the main complaints from men and women as they hit the 40's and beyond is that they look tired no matter how much sleep they manage to get. Many times it's the lines, wrinkles and gravity that contribute to this feeling that we don't look as young or energetic as we might feel.

And one of the first areas to show age can be the eyes either on the upper lid,the lower lid or both.

A friend showed up at a restaurant recently and although we couldn't put our finger on what was different about her she seemed to look refreshed and like she had just come back from a vacation. As it turns out she had just gotten her eyes "done," the simple way of saying she just had an Upper Blepharoplasty.

One of the premiere cosmetic surgeons in our area for performing eye surgery is Dr. Soheila Rostami of Oculo Facial Plastics Consultants in Reston, VA. Dr. Rostami is a board -certified surgeon specializing in lacrimal, orbital and reconstructive eyelid surgery.

Dr. Rostami was gracious enough to share her expertise with BeautyInDC.com readers and answer our questions on eyelid rejuvenation.

Q: Dr. Rostami it seems that one of the first places that shows our age is our eyes. What are the most popular procedures you perform to rejuvenate them?

A: Upper blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery) is one of those procedures that can help us appear more youthful, because the excess skin and fat are removed from the upper eyelids, which helps to restore the look we had when we were younger.

Also popular are (1) lower blepharoplasty (under eye surgery) to reduce sagging skin and puffiness caused by herniated fat under the eyes; (2) brow lifts to pull-up the forehead muscle and put the eyebrows back in the position you had when younger; and (3) sometimes ptosis (droopy eyelid) repair with a technique called a levator advancement, where the eyelid muscles are tightened with sutures.

Q: Who is a good candidate for one of these procedures?

A: Anyone, male or female, who has excess upper or lower eyelid skin or bagginess. Sometimes, this skin hangs down on the eyelids and interferes with one’s peripheral vision. We often hear from patients that their eyelids are too heavy, and they must use their forehead muscles to hold their eyelids up. By the end of the day, they use their fingers to hold open their eyelids and let their forehead muscles relax. When they do this, they feel a great sense of relief.

Q: Could you describe what you do during an Upper Blepharoplasty?

A: This is a procedure that is easily performed in-office using a local anesthetic. This is an over-simplified explanation, but here are the basic steps. First, the excess eyelid skin that needs to be removed is carefully measured and marked. This is an important step, because if not enough skin is removed, you won’t be happy, and if too much skin is removed, it can cause functional eyelid problems. The eyelid area is numbed with a local injection and then swabbed with an antiseptic. An incision is made with a surgical blade along your natural eyelid crease, and then the excess skin and fat are removed. The incision is then closed with sutures. An ointment is applied to the suture line for the next few days. Ice packs are also encouraged to be used off and on for at least a day. Sutures are removed 7 days later.

Q: What about a Lower Blepharoplasty?

A: Because there is more discomfort associated with the lower blepharoplasty, I recommend that this procedure be done in an outpatient surgery center under IV sedation. There are two ways of doing lower blepharoplasty, and it all depends on whether or not there is a lot of excess skin. If there is puffiness from herniated fat, an incision is made from the inside of the bottom eyelid and the fat is removed. If there is sagging excess skin as well as herniated fat, an incision is made along the lower lash line, the fat and excess skin is removed, and then the area is sutured back together.

Q: Is there a long recovery time from these procedures?

A: The eye area is very vascular, meaning that there are many blood vessels in the area, so it is normal to experience bruising and swelling after surgery. Healing is very individualized – how fast you heal depends on your general health and how your body usually heals. Generally, you can expect to resume light activities in about 1-2 weeks after surgery, which means no heavy lifting and no vigorous exercise during the recovery time.

Q: Are there any risks involved?

A: All surgical procedures involve risk. As my patient, I want you to fully understand all the risks associated with these procedures, so that you can make an informed decision. There are healing symptoms like swelling and bruising, discomfort and pain, and itching and scar redness which are normal to experience. Other risks include bleeding, inflammation, infection, wound separation, etc., which are dealt with quickly to resolve. Some of the most serious complications are also extremely rare. These include allergic reactions, blindness and loss of life. I discuss these risks with my patients in detail during their consultation.

Q: Are your patients usually pleased with the results?

A: My patients and I both are usually pleased with the surgical results, as I have been doing these procedures for several years and consider myself skilled in what I do. I receive letters from them, telling me how much their appearance has improved and their outlook has changed. For some, the surgery is more about function – their peripheral vision is improved, their eyes are no longer tired and irritated, and they no longer have to hold up their eyelids with their forehead muscles. Others tell me they receive many compliments on the color of their eyes, which haven’t changed, but are now much more noticeable to others!

Q: What is the cost involved and does insurance cover any of these procedures?

A: On my website, www.Beauty4Eye.com, I have posted costs under the “Services” tab – the last item in the left hand column, called “Pricing/Menu.” For my self-pay patients, I try to be fair and make my fees reasonable, especially when combining procedures.

Upper blepharoplasty, levator advancement for ptosis repair, and/or eyebrow lifts are sometimes covered by insurance companies. In order for these procedures to be covered by your insurance plan, medical necessity must be proven through clinical notes, photographs, and visual field tests (which shows how badly your upper eyelids are affecting your field of vision). These items are sent in advance to your insurance provider to see if they will cover the procedures. Lower blepharoplasty is not a covered procedure by insurance; it is strictly cosmetic.

Which Sex and the City Girl is Your Style?

As a faithful fan of the TV series and now the Sex and the City movies, I am always in awe of how great Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte look. They always are in tune with the latest trends but at the same time have such individual style.

The Right To Bare Legs

It's the season to wear bathing suits and shorts and show a lot of skin--and maybe some little flaws and things you would rather keep under wraps.

There is almost universal agreement that having a tan, real or otherwise, is a great way to mask any small marks or things we'd prefer to keep to ourselves. But sometime there are bigger issues or imperfections that tanning alone won't hide.

Things like spider and varicose veins, stretch marks, birth marks, scars and all those things that you'd rather not show off. Some products actually help prevent further problems and some can camouflage areas where the damage is done.

A few of the cover up products include one by an unlikely creator...Joan Rivers of all people! But she does have a beauty line she sells on QVC and I just happened to see her promoting it one day and was rather intrigued.

Joan Rivers Beauty Right to Bare Legs is a corrective concealer that can cover up veins or marks on your legs or anywhere you want to conceal an imperfection. It's $22.50 and comes in 3 shades but some are waitlisted so you probably have to order soon if you want it before the end of summer. It's gotten pretty good reviews on the QVC site (www .qvc.com) with just a few issues regarding the application. Apparently it dries quickly and so can be hard to spread and it requires some moisturizer on the skin. But it is waterproof and supposed to stay put until you wash it off with soap and water.

Along the same lines but probably a bit less of a cover up and more of an enhancer is Per-fekt Beauty's Body Perfection Gel. It's described as a multi-functional "skin perfector" that also adds a bit of a glow to the area it's applied. The product has Hyalauronic Microspheres that hydrate the skin and help firm, tone and improve the skin's elasticity. It is also water resistant and transfer proof. You can buy it at Sephora stores or through www.sephora.com.

If you have legs that sometimes ache from poor cirulation due to spider or varicose veins you might like a product that addresses that problem, plus helps their appearance from within.
Eminence Organic skin care line has a Lychee and Chestnut Firming Leg Treatment that improves circulation and stimulates skin and reducing the visible signs of varicose veins. Cost is $64.00 but Laser Plus in Vienna, VA www.laserplus.bz is offering a special on the product till 7/11 and you can buy it for $55.00. They also have a tester in their office if you want to try it out first.

There are always new colors and makeup trends for each season and I recently went to a pro to to find out what the hot looks are for this summer. Lindsay Ebbin, National Makeup Retail Director for Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas has spent his career in beauty, hair and makeup and shares his expertise with BeautyInDC.com.

Q: Lindsay can you tell us about your background?

A: I was discovered in high school by a modeling scout and modeled for 5 years professionally. I then became interested in the fashion arena and mentored under a celebrity makeup/hairstylist in Toronto, Canada. I continued learn as I began to work with woman who needed makeovers after having chemotherapy to help them look good feel better. In the early 90's a new makeup line was being formulated in Toronto and I learned color theory from that company. Q: What are the hot makeup colors for summer?

Making Mother's Day Beautiful For Everyone

Mother's Day is almost here and maybe you're counting your blessings for having a wonderful Mom who was always there for you. And hopefully you can open your heart to some less fortunate Moms in the DC area.

A dedicated group of local women and students will be delivering 300 gift bags called Beauty Within to homeless mothers temporarily residing with their families at Miriam's House and N Street Village.

If you would like to help they are soliciting donations of beauty products found in swag bags, hotel bath toiletries, gifts with purchase items, and any full-sized unused beauty products to be given to the women. In addition, books, magazines and gently used accessories are appreciated. The deadline to receive items is Thursday, May 6th.

Beauty Within was created 10 years ago by Lynda Erkiletian, president of THE Artist Agency, and the DC chapter of Fashion Group International as a community outreach program to recognize women who are often forgotten. Together with fashion merchandising students from Langley High School in McLean, Virginia, items are solicited, gift bags are embellished and stuffed with items, and then delivered to the shelters in time for Mother's Day.

Q: What types of improvements can someone expect from IPL—will it improve wrinkles and brown spots?

As skin ages, we start to loose collagen and elastin fibers which cause the age spots,broken capillaries and fine lines. The IPL coagulates or shrinks the brown spots by heating the area and targeting the melanin (color), gradually making them lighter and eventually disappear.

Q: Tell us a little bit more about electrolysis and what problems you can solve with this treatment?

A: Electrolosysis is my love. Electrolysis is the only safe, permanent, and medically approved method of hair removal. A very fine probe is inserted into the pre which is a natural opening in our skin that contains the hair follicle and then the hair is removed with forceps. A good electrolysis treatment is one in which you don’t feel any tugging, pulling, or tweezing. The treated hair should gently slide out. Electrolysis is safe for any body part from head to toe.

Nobody likes the frizzies! Between the humidity of Washington summers and the wet snow we're getting plenty of this winter a bottle of smoothing or anti-frizz lotion may not be enough. Q: We're hearing a lot about the Brazilian Keratin hair treatment what exactly is it?

A: It was introduced to the United States in 2006 by Marcia Teixeira who developed the product as a solution to her hair challenges. Relaxers were always too damaging and harsh on her hair, and for years she was seeking a safe alternative. She was inspired by hair treatments she discovered while traveling in Brazil.

The concept behind this procedure is that unlike chemical straighteners and relaxers, this process doesn’t involve breaking down the hair and restructuring it. Because the product shares the same pH as the hair itself, it does not compromise the hair's integrity, nor does it swell the hair shaft making it weaken its strength and elasticity. By choosing Brazilian Keratin over a relaxing/straightening procedure, you are are not at risk of breaking or damaging your hair (if applied by a properly trained and certified technician).

Q: Who is a good candidate for it--do things like previous straightening treatments or color treated hair make a difference?

A: Anyone can have this treatment done! It is a universal product and can be used safely on any hair type, including hair that is dry, over-processed, ethnic, color treated, or frizzy. No previous hair conditions will effect your eligibility to use this treatment for your hair needs, whether you're looking to loosening your curl, smooth frizz, or repair damaged hair texture.

Q: How does someone care for their hair after receiving the treatment to get the optimal results?

A: There are several Do's and Don'ts recommended by Marcia Teixeira to maintain long lasting results. I suppose for most people, the most difficult of these care instructions is that you cannot wash or bend the hair for 4 days after the application. This may seem unpleasant, but is an imperative step in the success of the treatment. With that being said, any other recommended procedures may seem quite easeful, such as using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner to prevent break down of the keratin.

Q: How long do the results last?

A: As with anything else, every one's hair takes the treatment differently. In most cases, if maintained properly, the treatment should last around 3 months. Once the treatment begins to wear off, the hair will revert back to it's natural wave pattern. I've had clients that have very unmanageable hair and use the treatment to make their hair easy to style on a daily basis. Initially they thought they wouldn't repeat the service after the product wears off, but soon after their texture returns, they realize they can't wait to get it done again!

Q: Are your clients happy with the treatment? Do you think it's better or more effective than other straightening or relaxing treatments?

A: It wouldn't be a fair assessment to compare the Brazilian Keratin Treatment to a relaxer or other straightening systems.. Unlike a relaxer, the Brazilian does not use any chemicals to change the hair's structure. It works like a deep conditioning treatment would, where you infuse proteins, keratin, and moisturizers into the hair which causes it to eliminate frizz and smooth the hair out. Because this process doesn't change the hair composition, the hair is only effected by the product remaining on the cuticle.

Relaxers and straighteners, aside from damaging and breaking the hair, also leave and indication of new growth (so if you start getting relaxers, you must continue with touch-ups so your hair doesn't grow out with different textures).

The keratin treatment eventually wears off and returns your hair back to its original state without any indication of regrowth. If you chose to use the keratin treatment to repair over processed or damaged hair (verses as a smoothing solution) the hair will continue to maintain a rejuvenated feel and texture even after the treatment has worn off.

The results I have seen are unbelievable. I personally am very impressed with the success of each treatment. Our clients can't tell us enough how excited they are to not have to worry about styling their unruly hair as they did in the past. I can't wait to have it done myself!

Q: What does it cost?

A: This treatment must be done very thoroughly and can be a lengthy process. Because of all of the work and time, the cost respectively ranges between $350-$600 in the DC area. To have the service done at LifeSpa will cost our clients $400. The client may also spend up to $50 dollars purchasing products to maintain the effects of the treatment. Although, this may seem like a steep investment, it can be compared to the costs associated with getting relaxers on a regular basis to control regrowth.

Local Trainers On The Fitness Trends

I recently asked two Washington area trainers for their thoughts on fitness trends we might be seeing more of in 2010.

I was really curious about those shape up shoes I'm seeing everywhere--you know the ones with the really thick sole that is supposed to mimic walking on the beach and says it promotes tightening and toning of our lower bodies if you wear them 30 minutes a day. Skechers seems to make the most popular ones although Reebox and some other companies make their own versions. I've heard a lot of women say they are thinking of buying them and they aren't cheap--usually upwards of $100.

I asked Phillip Bergman of Mindbody Fitness www.mindbodyfitness.us to take a look at them and assess whether he thought they would offer the benefits they tout based on his experience as a Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach.

Here's his review:

"The Shape Ups feature a “soft kinetic wedge insert and dynamic rolling bottom to stimulate walking barefoot on a yielding surface such as sand” It is designed for brisk walking (not running). The shoes put you slightly off balance and demand the muscles to activate in order to keep you balanced and centered.

What you get is greater muscle engagement and recruitment from the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, abdominals and obliques. In addition more stabilizer muscles activate such your adductors, hip flexors, and hip rotators.

Other benefits:

- Promotes weight loss ( but must be combined with a healthful nutrition plan). More muscle recruitment produces greater caloric expenditure. Naturally, if you are more comfortable and experience greater results you will be more motivated to walk further, with more passion and more often.

We're having a tough winter in the Washington area and it's only January so there will be more sub-zero days to come. Our lips really get the brunt of it since they're usually exposed and it's hard to keep them dry.

For the longest time it seemed like Chapstick was our only option for moisturizing lips but in recent years many beauty companies seemed to add lip treatments to their line of products. Q: Lauren tell us a little about your background and how www.theecoluxelife.com came about?

A: After having worked in the retail industry for many years, I saw some important emerging trends: first, a growing trend amongst retailers towards the green movement and sustainability, second, an increased interest amongst consumers to learn about and have access to these products, and third, the continued growth of ecommerce, especially in areas underserved by retail stores. And that's a rule I've tried to stick by when making choices in my beauty regimen. I will say that the marketplace is often misleading because it is highly unregulated so you often run into a problem called greenwashing -- which is when companies claim their products are green when they actually aren't. Here is what it boils down to, for us anyway... for years companies were creating insane synthetic concoctions in a lab for skin cream, hair conditioner, you name it. Great advances in combining products were made, but then we learned that many of these chemicals are actually really toxic and quite bad for us. Now there are so many vendors who are trying to identify, combine and mix natural ingredients. And WOW! The scents and effectiveness are unbelievable! So we've tried to create a marketplace where people come, learn about these issues, and feel confident they are making better choices. To give you an example: if you wear black mascara, you are more than likely putting coal-tar, a highly toxic chemical right on your eye. Mascara is unregulated with the rest of the beauty industry. So why not use a black mascara that is amazing, has staying power and is natural? We provide that option.

Q: Are there any particular ingredients we should look for if we want to go "green" in our beauty routine?

A: For the most part, I think it is easier to look for ingredients that are not in a product rather than looking for what is in a particular item. An easy rule of thumb is to try to avoid parabens, phthalates, sodium laurel sulfates, and really anything that ends in "amine" (specifically diethanolamine and triethanolamine). Also, watch out for words on ingredient lists such as "color", "aroma" and "fragrance". Many of these things are used to make products foam or are used as preservatives. Studies have shown they can be toxic when absorbed and may be linked to numerous health issues. Most organic products make a point to tell you on the label when their product is free of many of the substances I just listed, so that's a great place to start. Q: What are some popular beauty lines you feature that we might want to check out especially if we're interested in anti-aging skin care?

Think about how that works. A patch you put on your skin disperses medicine or a chemical into your bloodstream, just like taking a pill or a shot. Beauty products are absorbed into your skin the same way. We rub them all over without thinking twice. Using synthetic or processed ingredients is hard for your body to breakdown the same way it is hard when we eat food that is chemically engineered and over processed. We have what we call "the lipstick test". The challenge is to use ONLY an all natural or eco lipstick like Jane Iredale or Stript for one week. Keep your other lipsticks out of sight! Then, after a week pick up your normal lipstick and go to put it on. It won't make it to your lips. The smell of the chemicals that you had become so used to will be overwhelming. Best of the Magazine Makeup Tips

I spent some time over the holidays catching up on my beauty magazine reading--and found an article about beauty tips. I've probably read close to a thousand of these articles over the years but this one was different--maybe because it was 27 different experts offering their best secrets but I found them to be some of the most helpful and creative and thought I would share the ones that stood out and weren't just covering the same old territory:

1) Use two kinds of mascaras--coat the top lashes with a volumizing one to create thickness and the bottom ones with a waterproof one to avoid smudges.

2) Carry dryer sheets in your purse and run a sheet over your hair for frizzies and flyaways (especially helpful with static electricity in frigid weather!).

3) To keep your skin soft in the winter apply a body oil first after a shower while skin is still damp and follow with a rich body cream.

4) Every woman has one thing she needs to "fix" on her face and one thing that's really great about it . If you're not sure what they are, ask your best friend.

5) Concealer should always follow foundation. If you put it on first and then you blend on the foundation you're erasing it. If you layer concealer on top, it stays where it needs to be and does it's job.

6) To avoid mascara smudges hold a plastic spoon under the upper and lower lashes to sheild the rest of your eye makeup. It fits right under your eye and you can just throw it away when you're done.

7) If you're intimidated by liquid eyeliner, create a "stencil" by drawing a line with a taupe eye pencil first and then apply liquid liner over that.

8) To perk up your eyes dab the under eye area with aloe vera gel for temporary firming.

9) Make your eyeliner last by setting it with powder and going over it with a matching eye shadow.

10) Everyone should have two pairs of tweezers: a needle nose one for hard to get strays and a slanted one for gripping several hairs at a time.

Q: Celena, if someone can't afford high priced designer clothes and accessories do you have some tips on how to look trendy without spending a fortune?

A: Most of the trends that you see on the runway and on your favorite celebrities can be found in your local retail and franchise stores. Many stores have a "dress for less" version of higher-priced trendy items.

Bargain basement stores such as Filene's Basement, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx have "recessionista" prices for the frugal yet trendy shopper. Also, stores such as Express, The Limited, Forever 21, Gap, and Banana Republic have lower priced versions of the looks seen on the runways.

Additionally, department stores like Macys, Nordstroms, JC Penny, Bloomingdale's usually have the higher priced and lower-priced versions of the latest trends to contrast and compare. If you are looking for high designer/couture fashion or accessories, try the clearance store versions of luxury department stores like Sak's Off Fifth Avenue or Nordstom Rack.

An easy way to find lower priced frocks is to simply ask the salesperson. I always advise my clients to create a "look book" of the trends that they love. Then, take it to one of the bargain stores and have a sales assistant help you find the pieces. They will work their hardest to find the items and make a sale!

Q: Are there some key pieces of clothing we should have?

A: I believe that there are key pieces that every person should have in their wardrobe. Each woman should have one of the following:a blouse, a pair of slacks,a pair of jeans, a cashmere sweater, a dress, and a great pair of heels. All of these items must be suited for their body type and proportions.

If you can only choose one of these, make sure that you have a great dress. It doesn't have to be a LBD, but it does have to be wearable to both a professional or social event with the exchange of a few accessories (to make it appropriate).

Q: Which items are better to splurge on and which ones can we get away with finding less expensive versions of?

A: You should always splurge on your shoes and outerwear. Your feet have to be comfortable, especially if you are in a profession where you might walk for a good portion of the day.

Shoes, if worn and maintained properly, can last throughout your entire adult lifetime.(Great way to save money!)

Additionally, outerwear should be of the best quality that you can afford. Your outerwear should be a mix of classic pieces that will last the test of time...and fashion trends.

Q: What are the advantages of hiring an image consultant?

A: Within the first seven seconds that someone looks at you, perceptions are created about your intelligence level, your profession, your educational background, your home neighborhood, the type of car you drive, etc. If a picture is a thousand words, don't you want your picture to say exactly what you intend it to say?

An image consultant can assist you in creating that picture and assist you in discovering your own personal style. You are a visual brand of your goals and objectives. If your visual look is not aligned with your stated goals, it creates confusion to those who you meet.
