Discovering Your Personal DC Style

You schedule regular beauty appointments so you're skin, hair, nails and body will project the best image to the people you meet. But what about your clothing and accessories--what do they say about you?

Image consultants can offer valuable advice and services to make sure you're entire appearance is sending the right message. I caught up with one local expert to explore the ways we can have it all together from head to toe.

Celena Gill, AICI www. dcimageconsultant.com is an image consultant, etiquette trainer and executive trainer who combined her experiences in education, fashion, beauty, law, business and communication to establish Style DC, LLC, an image consulting firm based in Washington.

Q: Celena, if someone can't afford high priced designer clothes and accessories do you have some tips on how to look trendy without spending a fortune?

A: Most of the trends that you see on the runway and on your favorite celebrities can be found in your local retail and franchise stores. Many stores have a "dress for less" version of higher-priced trendy items.

Bargain basement stores such as Filene's Basement, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx have "recessionista" prices for the frugal yet trendy shopper. Also, stores such as Express, The Limited, Forever 21, Gap, and Banana Republic have lower priced versions of the looks seen on the runways.

Additionally, department stores like Macys, Nordstroms, JC Penny, Bloomingdale's usually have the higher priced and lower-priced versions of the latest trends to contrast and compare. If you are looking for high designer/couture fashion or accessories, try the clearance store versions of luxury department stores like Sak's Off Fifth Avenue or Nordstom Rack.

An easy way to find lower priced frocks is to simply ask the salesperson. I always advise my clients to create a "look book" of the trends that they love. Then, take it to one of the bargain stores and have a sales assistant help you find the pieces. They will work their hardest to find the items and make a sale!

Q: Are there some key pieces of clothing we should have?

A: I believe that there are key pieces that every person should have in their wardrobe. Each woman should have one of the following:a blouse, a pair of slacks,a pair of jeans, a cashmere sweater, a dress, and a great pair of heels. All of these items must be suited for their body type and proportions.

If you can only choose one of these, make sure that you have a great dress. It doesn't have to be a LBD, but it does have to be wearable to both a professional or social event with the exchange of a few accessories (to make it appropriate).

Q: Which items are better to splurge on and which ones can we get away with finding less expensive versions of?

A: You should always splurge on your shoes and outerwear. Your feet have to be comfortable, especially if you are in a profession where you might walk for a good portion of the day.

Shoes, if worn and maintained properly, can last throughout your entire adult lifetime.(Great way to save money!)

Additionally, outerwear should be of the best quality that you can afford. Your outerwear should be a mix of classic pieces that will last the test of time...and fashion trends.

Q: What are the advantages of hiring an image consultant?

A: Within the first seven seconds that someone looks at you, perceptions are created about your intelligence level, your profession, your educational background, your home neighborhood, the type of car you drive, etc. If a picture is a thousand words, don't you want your picture to say exactly what you intend it to say?

An image consultant can assist you in creating that picture and assist you in discovering your own personal style. You are a visual brand of your goals and objectives. If your visual look is not aligned with your stated goals, it creates confusion to those who you meet. When you look great, with the proper fit and proportion, wearing the colors best suited for you....you feel great and act with confidence.

Skin Tight For the New Year!

As you make your New Year's party plans and even ponder your resolutions for looking great in 2010, you might like to know your options to take care of a number of aging skin issues. Most of us want a nice , tight jawline, less wrinkles and age spots. And we'd like to do it quickly and in the least invasive way.

It gets confusing sorting out all the different options but Kim Asack, who is a master aesthetician at Vitalia Medspa www.vitaliamedspava.com in Falls Church gave me a great description of their skin tightening procedure called ReFirme plus some other services that you can use for a complete anti-aging program.

Q: What is your training in skin care?

A: I have had a Va. Cosmetologist license for over thirty years. Skin care and laser treatments have always been covered under that license until recently, but I have been "grad fathered in" to being a master aesthetician based on the years of experience of being one the the most experienced technicians nationally.
I received laser training starting in 1999, when I attended Light Speed Institute, in Naples Fl. It was one of the first laser schools that opened nationally.
I have attended more than 40 aesthetic medical conferences since that time to keep up with the newest technology and techniques.

Q: What is the ReFirme? What steps and products do you use?

A: ReFirme is considered a medical procedure. It is used predominately on faces to tighten skin with the use of radio frequency.

It can also be used in other areas for instance the abdominal post pregnancy.

The class two medical device has a hand piece that emits a polarized current over the surface of the skin that tightens skin. It slides over an aloe vera gel that acts as a conductor to create a thermal reaction to effectively tighten lax skin. It's particularly effective on the lower jowl area and neck and is safe enough to be used on upper eye lids.

I tend to treat one side on the face for about 30 minutes and let the patient see the difference which is subtle, but very effective.

I give realistic expectations during consultations. It's not a face lift by any means but it is safe, comfortable and works consistently on all skin types.

In my opinion, it is by far the most effective skin tightening treatment on the market for those who are not wanting a surgical procedure.

Q: Who is a good candidate for one--what skin type or problems would they have?

A: Anyone who is concerned with loose skin. ReFirme is safe for all skin types.

As skin ages, skin become lax, sags, and has spots (broken veins, lines, age spots, sun damage).

Most patients over the age of 40 most likely would be a good candidate for a combination laser series that would address all the aspects of aging.

That would be ReFirme (for sagging) Skin rejuvenation (for spots)and Matrix (for lines).

Skin rejuvenation is our only tool that may not recommend to our darker skin patients.

Q: What is the cost?

A: A combination package cost approximately $1800. It would be customized for the patients concerns.

ReFirme alone cost $450 per treatment or a package of 5 can be purchased for $1800.

Both are an excellent value.

Q: How will your skin look after wards--will there be any redness or blotchiness or can you get one right before an event?

A: These are considered "no down time" treatments". Only a slight pinkness may happen in the very short term.

Make up can be applied following the treatment.

Q: How often should you get treaments for optimal results?

A: It is recommended a patient receive three to five treatments based on how lax the skin is and the age of the patient. The treatments are spaced three weeks apart.

After the original series a the patient is recommended to maintain the tightness with a one time treatment every six months.

Great Skin Between the Pages

Why have you heard the names Rodan + Fields? Do the words infomercials, ProActiv or acne solution ring any bells...

They are actually renowned female dermatologists
Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields
http://cpadgerson.myrandf.com/ who developed that well known product and now have a direct selling brand of prestige skin care products to combat everthing from sun damage to aging to rosacea and acne.

Since they're California based getting an appointment might be tough, but the next best thing is their new book "Write Your Skin A Prescription For Change."

The inspiring idea behind it is that no matter whether you are 18 or 81 you can change your skin's destiny--nice to hear to those of us who baked in the sun one too many summers as teenagers.

Rodan + Fields' philosopy is that we can gain control over our skincare issues and it's easier than we think. And that once we do we'll be transformed by the gain in self esteem and confidence.

It's a big challenge but the doctors do it all through case studies, charts, lists, interactive exercises and insider tips.

Here are some of the key points that the book addresses:

** How to assess your complexion like a dermatologist
** What the most common skincare concerns are and options for treatment
** How to combat the key aging culprits
** How to reverse sun damage and restore a healthy, clear, even-toned complexion
** About the latest cosmetic procedures and if they are right for you
** When to self-treat and when to visit a dermatologist

It really is a pretty universal concern that spans so many age groups so it's another idea for stocking stuffers or holiday gifts to family, friends and co-workers.

The book is getting good reviews and is available in book stores and Amazon for $24.95 but you can get a copy free in a special promotion going on through December. Become a Rodan + Fields skincare preferred customer and order $150 or more of products through December 31 and receive the book, "Write Your Skin A Prescription for Change."

You can order from a local consultant by going to the website http://cpadgerson.myrandf.com/ or emailing cpadgerson@myrandf.com.

Keeping it Bright Till Your Next Hair Appointment

Seems that almost every female of every age colors her hair these days. Some do it to color the grey, some to improve on mother nature and some just because it's our perogative to change our looks when we get the urge.

Coloring products have improved over the years and seem to do the job well with little damage to our locks.

But the current recession mind-set has many of us are waiting longer between appointments and trying to stretch out the benefits of our last trip to the salon.

With that in mind I spoke to Michael Hok, a stylist at Salon Roi who is a real pro at both color and cuts.

Salon Roi not only has a large and varied selection of products at their store in Woodley Park, they now have a large online store on their website www.salonroidc.com, so you can order with a click of the mouse.

Michael told me which lines and products that do the job of keeping our color fresh until we have our next one on one with the stylist.

Phyto is a well known name in hair products with a huge line and a product for just about every hair type. So it's not surprising they are at the top of the list for products to reduce color fading.

Their Phytocitrus Vital Radiance Shampoo works for both color-treated and permed hair with plant-based properties that close up the hair shafts opened by hair color to prevent damage and vulnerability of the hair. Grapefruit extracts add shine and brilliance and a Wood Cellulose extract helps retain moisture making the product both good for the hair as well as preserving the color. The shampoo is $24.00.

For double protection pair the shampoo with the their Soin Vital Radiance Mask that has the same Grapefruit extract along with rich Plant Butters to restore your hair's beauty. This condition sells for $38.00.

Practically a household name, Paul Mitchell is another company that makes shampoos and conditioners specifically to keep haircolor fresh.

Their Color Protect Daily Shampoo is gentle enough to use everyday and will protect the hair's structure while providing UVA and UVB protection which is so important to protect your color from fading in the sun.

You can pair the shampoos with Paul Mitchell's Color Protect Daily Conditioner which will smooth, detangle and add moisture.

Beyond shampoos and conditioners you might want to consider styling products that are formulated to protect your color.

Dullness and lack of shine are problems associated with processed hair so Goldwell has created their Dual Senses Color Leave-In Gloss Spray. The company calls their Pomegranate Extract and UV-filter technology their Brilliance System and shining hair is the result. The product sells for $15.00.

They also have a mousse-lovers product that is color sensitive called the Inner Effect and Color Live Volume Mousse. It uses the latest technology to protect hair from damaging outside influences and maintains color and shine while adding volume and hold. It sells for $22.00.

All of the products are available at Salon Roi, 2602 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20008 or call 202-234-2668.

You can also order them online on their website at http://salonroidc.com/sunshop/index.php.

A Palette To Suit Every Taste

I have a love/hate relationship with makeup palettes. I seem to always be in search of the perfect one that will include all the essentials I need in the most flattering colors and I rarely find it!

It's all about personal preference and colors that are flattering for your individual coloring and lifestyle.

With that in mind, I searched the most popular and trendy lines for sets that might work for everyday or special occasions. You might want to get them soon though as most are special editions that won't be around for long.

POP Beauty's Cabaret is one of the most comprehensive and cutting edge of the palettes out right now. It includes 5 smokey eyeshadows, matte face powder, a swirl of 5 highlighters, 2 bronzers and 4 lip duos. I'm not counting but that is a lot of products at your fingertips for a very reasonable price of 29.50! It must be popular as it is out of stock at the POP Beauty website but it does seem to still be available at www.beauty.com.

If you're looking for something a little more basic, Bobbi Brown's "Eyes and Cheeks to Go" might fit the bill. There are both Warm and Cool Eye Quads in shimmer and matte shades surrounding rouge in a universal tone of Blushed Rose. The set, including a mini-eyeshadow brush is $60.00 and is available at Nordstrom.

Holiday time creates the need for more shimmer and color which is
exactly what you'll find in a budget priced palette from Target. NP Set is a line by Napoleon Perdis sold at the store and is apparently flying off shelves. The set is $32.00 and includes 18 eyeshadows, 4 blushes, 4 lip glosses and 3 brush applicators--in other words if you have a party every night you can have a different look all the way through New Year's eve! Available at www.target.com.

Looking Good For an Extra 5%

It's baaack...and it's enough to make those creases between our eyes even worse!

If the health care reform bill passes it's possible that elective beauty procedures will be taxed 5%--the so called "bo-tax." Facelifts, tummy tucks, laser hair removal and yes, Botox and even teeth whitening could all be subject to this excise tax as of January 1, 2010 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34048874/ns/health-health_care/

Certain procedures such as breast reconstruction or a deformity caused by an accident, trauma or disfiguring disease would be exempt.

We heard about this tax a while ago when it was being considered in the Senate Finance committee although it was dropped. But apparently it has reared it's ugly (so to speak) head again when the latest version of the bill was unveiled by Senator Harry Reid on Wednesday night.

Plastic surgeons are expected to lobby against this tax and some people feel it's a tax against women since they seek out the procedures that will be affected in much larger percentages than men.

It will be interesting to see if people flock to plastic surgeon and dermatologist's offices in the next month or so to try to get procedures done if the bill passes.

Of course no one should rush to get plastic surgery or any procedure done without first carefully researching the doctor to make sure he/she is board certified and experienced in the operation you're seeking.

But if you have already done your homework and were considering waiting until after the first of the year to have some nips or tucks you may want to consider moving up your timetable if you aren't prepared to add another 5% to the total bill!

New Moon Generates New Looks in Makeup

Twilight sequel mania has been building and will reach a frenzy this weekend with the release of "New Moon."

The stars faces are in just about every magazine and entertainment show that exists. Considering that some of them are vampires they are all quite handsome and gorgeous and appealing. So if you would like to feel connected to the characters and try to get into the spirit of the stories, there is Twilight Beauty www.twilightbeauty.com which includes two makeup lines inspired by the movies.

One line is called Luna Twilight and the other is Volturi. And while your initial thought (as mine was) that this is all a bit over- commercialized, once you see the products you might actually be impressed.

Of course they couldn't resist playing off the themes and characters with some of the names and descriptions.

In the Luna Twilight line there is the Just Bitten staining balm--which is a very emollient lipstick in four shades.

The Mortal Glow Blushing Creme is a beautiful blend of colors in a mousse and creme formula for easy application and a flattering satin finish.

Of couse shimmering skin in the moonlight is a must for aspiring Bellas so the Immortal Liquid Body Shimmer will do the trick. The formula is ultra hydrating and comes in unique shades like
a sheer black with gold flecks or sheer fuschia with a pink shimmer.

Luna Twilight is available at Nordstrom stores or through their website www.nordstrom.com.

The second line is called Volturi also known as the "royal" family amongst all vampires in the movie and representing a supernatural beauty that transcends time.

Some of the products in this line are duplicates of the Luna line but there are some that are different like the Enrapture Lip Gloss that come in the same shades as the body shimmer. These are super sheer glosses with a subtle scent. Obsess is a magenta with gold shimmer and a raspberry scent and Arsenic is a sheer black that goes on clear with gold shimmer and a licorice scent.

In the body line Volturi offers a Reign Scented Body Mist which are colored, shimmering scents with names like Bella, Wicked, Forbidden Fruit and Romance.

The Volturi line is sold at Hot Topics stores and on their website at www.hottopic.com.

Don't Leave Your Skin Out In The Cold

I consulted with a pro to find out what we should do to help our skin make the transition from summer to the colder months of winter.

I assumed we might need to change our routine, products and maintenance and those suspicians were confirmed by trained esthetician Julie Holly.

Julie is based LifeSpa & Salon http://lifetimefitness.com/lifespa in the Lifetime Fitness club in Rockville and has 7 years of experience in European facials, waxing, microdermabrasion, chemical/enzymatic exfoliation as well as body treat
ments. She has worked along side plastic surgeons and physicians and learned about chemical peels, laser treatments, light therapies and injectables.

Q: Julie should we care for our skin differently as the temperature and seasons change?

Julie: Yes. In warmer weather, especially in the DC area, the air is very moist and in order to reduce excess oil a mild, foaming cleanser and light weight moisturizer are best. A mask containing a clay such as kaolin is also beneficial in soaking up excess oil on a weekly basis.

In the colder weather that is now approaching, a switch to a milky, cream based cleanser is best as the air is a lot dryer and we don't want to strip the skin of precious oil. Your moisturizer should also contain a nonco
medogenic oil to assist in keeping the water level in the skin balanced.

Lastly, exfoliate and follow with a hydrating mask weekly.

Q: Do you have any specific treatments or products that will protect our skin during the really c
old months of winter?

Julie: A deep exfoliation, also known as a light peel, is a great way to remove the abundance of dead skin from the surface thus allowing the hydrating products that are introduced into the skin via massage and mask penetrate even deeper.

One peel to try at LifeSpa/Salon is the Murad IP5 treatment that contains 5 different types of exfoliators and brightening ingredients: glycolic acid, salycilic acid, vitamin C, lactic acid and Indian fig.

This is also a great time of year to receive a body scrub and hydrating body wrap -- don't forget skin is the largest organ of the body!

For homecare, I highly recommend switching over to a cream based cleanser such as Phytomer's Doux Visage Velvet Cleansin
g Cream or Murad's Moisture Rich Facial Wash. It is also advisable to ditch your astringent and turn to a hydrating toner followed by a more rich moisturizer such as Phytomer's Nutricontinue Cream with Shea Butter or Murad's Nightly Hydrolock with Immunodefense.

For body I recommend soaking in Phytomer's Oligomer Lyophilized Sea Water Bath followed by Hydracontinue Moisturizing Body Milk.

Q: How often should we get facials?

Julie: Depending on the condition of the skin and the goals that you want to achieve, facials can be received as often as once a week, although you can also notice an improvement in the skin with monthly treatments.

If you are trying to overcome a condition such as chronic acne, sun damage or fine lines and wrinkles, I usually recommend a series of 6 peel treatments done weekly followed by a monthly maintenance facial that may or may not include a peel.

Special: Book a Signature Facial with Julie in November and receive a complimentary Brow Shaping!

Organic Products to Smooth and Soothe

Body Elements in Vienna, VA www.bodyelements.com is dedicated to eliminating cellulite with their Lipomassage by Endermologie treatments. They have also found a way to up the ante with some organic products that increase results and their customer satisfaction.

ilike organic skin care is from Hungary, which has a long culture of caring for skin. One of the most popular products they use is the European Organic Body Masque.

The Body Masque treatment focuses on reducing the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks, while toning flabby and loose skin. By combining Lipomassage by Endermologie with this new body masque, Body Elements can target stubborn, dense cellulite and accelerate the detoxification process.

The Body Masque is the perfect complement to Lipomassage. The process is simple. The technician masks the targeted areas first and then continue with the Lipomassage as normal. The Body Masque adds only 5 minutes to the session and clients have seen a "huge difference" in their results after only one treatment.

The natural fruits, vegetables, and herbs of The Body Masque are massaged deep into your fat cells, providing a more robust treatment to increase your metabolism and release toxins. The treatment promotes smooth, tight, and toned skin, while reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Here's what one customer who has been adding the mask to treatments had to say:

“I love Body Element’s new Body Masque. After just one Body Masque treatment, I noticed a huge difference in the smoothness of my skin! My problem areas feel noticeably smoother and tighter. I have added the Body Masque to each and every one of my Lipomassage sessions. Thank you for finding this breakthrough treatment!” Kiva P.

The product is only available for professional use but be sure to ask about it when getting your next treatment.

A product you can buy for at home use is the Circulation Revitalizing Body Lotion also by ilike.

It can be used both to enhance your Endermologie treatment or just to revive tired, swollen legs after a long day on your feet.

Circulation Revitalizing Body Lotion uses Hungarian paprika, as well as carrot and cinnamon extracts, to reduce the appearance of cellulite, regenerate collagen fibers, increase metabolism, improve elasticity in connective tissue and increase oxygen uptake to skin cells. Not only that, but this breakthrough lotion naturally detoxifies the skin.

You can feel the powerful, warming effects of the natural ingredients immediately after application. By stimulating cells and increasing circulation, this lotion naturally helps burn fat cells in fatty tissue and reduces the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks and surface varicose veins. It's also perfect for tired and swollen legs, poor circulation areas, and sluggish, pale skin.

The lotion is often applied prior to exercise to increase the effectiveness of the work-out by stimulating the metabolism and burning fat cells faster.

A product sold at Body Elements that will be perfect for those relaxing winter baths as well as offering other benefits are their Sea Salts from the Dead Sea.

These sea salts are from the waters of the Dead Sea, the mud, and the salts extracted from it, are rich in unique concentrations of life-enhancing minerals. As the ancient Roman spa ruins at the site prove, Dead Sea salt therapies have been effectively used for thousands of years. These Dead Sea salts contain more than twenty natural and unprocessed minerals in 10 times higher concentration than other sea salts.

Research shows that concentrations of minerals such as those contained in this product can improve, and in some cases alleviate serious skin diseases such as dermatitis, skin allergy symptoms, eczema and psoriasis. Research and practice have also proven that Dead Sea mineral salts can provide relief for rheumatologic conditions, painful joints, respiratory or eye conditions and more. With the help of the detoxifying and softening effects and enhanced relaxation provided by the salt bath, you can alleviate stress and insomnia in addition to experiencing general skin condition improvement.

The “Soothing Breeze” version refreshes the mind with organic Lavender and Peppermint Oil. This bath salt also contains Lavender buds to further enhance the herbal infusion and the aromatherapeutic experience. This is a bath not to miss!

Customer feedback has been postive:

I was expecting a relaxing bath but what I received was incredible. I’m not much of a bather but every once in a blue moon I will sit in the tub for a few minutes and try to relax. I added this lavender scented bath salt to my bath and sat for a few minutes. I had been stressed out for days and my body was stiff and achy. I thought a bath would probably help. I sat for a few minutes and actually felt the ache melt out of my muscles. That night I experienced one of the best night’s sleep that I’d had in a long time. Taming and Shaping the Brow--The Best Kits

Eyebrows are getting lots of attention these days--and the consensus for fall is a thicker and more defined brow. I've heard many times that brows frame your face and can make a huge difference in how you look but I don't think I really believed it until I had my brows done professionally.

Daiva at Salon Roi is one of the best at brow tinting and shaping-- she is a perfectionist who meticulously shapes, tweezes and tints and manages to create a perfect looking brow where there were just some sparse hairs--she is truly an eyebrow magician!

In between appointments, when left to our own devices it might be worth investing in some of the kits and tools available in stores and here are some of the latest:

The Hollywood eyebrow guru to the stars is Anastasia http://www.anastasia.net. Apparently many A-listers can't be seen on the red carpet without a trip to her Beverly Hills salon. If that's a bit beyond your budget you can purchase one of her 31 different eyebrow related products in beauty and department stores.

In the interest of space here is the most comprehensive kit she offers--the 7 Item Brow Book. It's apparently like having a brow salon at home and has seven pieces including tweezers, brow powder duo, 4 brow stencils, dual ended brush, brow gel and highlighting pencil. It's a $161.oo value for $85.00 right now at Nordstrom.

A company called Billion Dollar Brows http://www.billiondollarbrows.com has a tool that is much less expensive than the name and has been featured in many magazines and tv shows. Their claim to fame is the Brow Buddy tool--which creates an arch by taking into account your face shape to give you symmetrical, beautifully shaped brows. They also have a salon in Beverly Hills (are you sensing a theme?) but their kit is available locally at Beauty 360--the beauty product store owned by CVS that carries prestige and niche brands. The Brow Buddy Kit includes the tool, brush, sharpener, white pencil and an instructional guide plus DVD. The kit is $35 and is available at Beauty 360 at 1350 Connecticut Avenue, NW at Dupont Circle.

Benefit Cosmetics has a kit they call Brows A Go-Go that includes tools for your brows and eyes combined. In this kit you'll get 2 shades of brow powder, brow wax, min-tweezers, brush, how to guide plus liner, eyebright and highlighter powder for the brow bone. The kit is $38.00 and is available at http://www.benefitcosmetics.com.

Then there is the website that let's you create your own kit based on the shape and type of eyebrows you have or want. It's a bit like the dress up kits you had as a kid where you could change the outfits on the cutout. For $43.60 the site http://www.eybrowz.com let's you customize your kit with a choice of stencils from 100 plus different shapes (who knew there were that many!) , stencil holder, 2 eyebrow powders, white pencil, 3 brushes, instructions and pouch to keep it all together.

Local Stylist Follows Her Passion for Perfume

Henrieta Dzurikaninova's path to creating her own line of perfume's sounds a little like a fairy tale. And it was a movie that led her to carrying out her lifelong dream.

Henrieta has her own business called Fabulous Inc. www.fabulousincorporated.com and is a personal shopper, stylist and advisor.

As the Slovak Republic native and current Washingtonian relates the story in her own words, " I always loved fragrances and cosmetics in general from a very young age ( my father always laughs at me that I loved to be pampered since the day I was born ). I have been thinking about launching my own perfume once my business was successful, but it was just a dream.... at the beginning of last June I was working as a stylist on a movie and I visited Bloomingdale's in New York.

As I was walking around I got lost and I ended up at Fragrance section, and I was asked by a woman if I would like to create my perfume. I looked at her so surprised, thinking she could read my mind and said yes, but I have to study first and I'm planning to go to France to take classes.... she said I could create one on the spot and asked what I liked. Without thinking I mentioned various flower scents that are my favorites. They blended what I told them and were blown away, telling me it was wonderful, sexy and different, and that they had never smelled anything like that. When I returned home I started to do the research and 2 months later I decided to order oils and bottles. One morning after a really hard day at work I woke up with this crazy energy and the feeling that I had to mix a perfume. I started to mix the scents, created the packaging and by the evening I had three perfumes!"

The result are three fragrances: Fabulous Inc. has notes of jasmine, Fabulous by Henrieta notes of orange blossom and Fabulous Her notes of orchid. Every perfume is personally mixed by Henrieta and every bottle gets her handmade attention.

All three perfumes are 100% Pure Oils , no alcohol or dilutants added. Bottles don't have pump, so they are environmentally friendly and sell for $50 for 1 oz. They are currently available at Sangaree Boutique, 3288 M Street, NW and Green and Blue Boutique, 1350 Connecticut Avenue, NW with other locations coming soon.

Staying Fit In DC With Trainer To Moms

Staying fit can be a challenge for all Washington area men and women. Busy careers and nights out might take priority over fitness and exercise. Add a new baby or one on the way to the equation and it gets even trickier to stay in shape or regain your pre-pregnancy body.

Vionna Jones http://www.fitindc.com made the switch from civil engineering to certified personal trainer and started Fit in DC in 2005 to focus on the needs of personal clients. In addition to working one on one she teaches yoga, yoga for children, prenatal yoga, prenatal fitness and Pilates. Although she has all types of clients she especially likes working with expectant and new mothers. She operates out of City Fitness in Cleveland Park in Washington and Hot Mama Fitness in Bethesda, MD.

I asked her about her tips for staying fit and an upcoming event she's sponsoring in the new year.

BeautyInDC.com: What type of training and how often does someone have to maintain to lose weight?

Vionna: Each person will have a different path to losing weight. It depends on each individual's needs. The important part is to make sure that the amount of calories burned during a day is more than the amount of calories taken in during a day. This means that not only does a person need to exercise to burn calories, but he/she has to decrease the calories consumed in a healthy and purposeful way. Exercise alone will not do it. However, Everyone should exercise on most days of the week for at least 30 minutes. Also, Weight training is just as important as cardiovascular activity.

BeautyInDC.com: The new year will be here before we know it and a lot of us make resolutions about getting fit--tell us about the event you're sponsoring this January to give us the incentive to make 2010 our best year?

Vionna: As a self-employed woman, I notice that I often sacrifice doing things for myself because I feel that I should be doing something related to my business. I am sure you can relate to that. However, since I am a fitness professional, one thing that I absolutely won't sacrifice are my daily workouts and my healthy eating habits. But I know that many other women do.

Because of this fact, my colleague Kimberly Rush Lynch, of Cultivating Health, and I have designed a retreat to help busy women like ourselves learn how they can make their own health and well-being a priority.

This weekend retreat will take place at the Historic Kent Manor Inn in Stevensville, Maryland. If we're going be helpful to others we must FIRST nourish ourselves.

This weekend retreat will be an opportunity to get support around making you a priority and bringing more joy into your life. Kick back, take a deep breath and explore a more positive relationship with fitness and food. You'll learn how physical activity and mindful eating can be great self-nourishment and personal empowerment tools that you can incorporate into your daily routine easily. Bring a friend and experience the benefits of having a support system to hold you accountable for the life changing commitments that you will make to yourself during this retreat.

To learn more about the retreat, please see our website at: http://www.fitindc.com/freespirit.com.

Although we say that the retreat is for executives and entrepreneurs, this event is beneficial for all busy women who would like to make their own health and fitness a priority. It will make a great gift for any woman that you know who is looking to become healthy!

Strike Gold or Silver With Mineral Makeup

Jane Iredale http://www.janeiredale.com was the first to supply medispas, plastic surgeons and dermatologists with a full line of makeup based on minerals and saw the advantage of offering them makeup that was good for the skin.

After microdermabrasion, a chemical peel or laser treatment when the skin might still be a bit red and sensitive this is the kind of makeup that is soothing enough to wear while hiding the effects of the procedure.

But beyond that it's makeup for everyday and any occasion. There are always new Iredale products and colors that reflect the current trends just like any other cosmetics/skin care company.

Dermatology & Clinical Skin Care Center http://www.dermskin.com will be featuring Jane Iredale National Makeup Artist and Educator Angela this Monday for free makeovers and one on one makeup applications. See all the details below and here are some products from their Silver Lining collection:

Silver Lining features three complimenatry shades in an intense pigment formula and would be perfect for creating the smokey eye trend that is huge this season.

Silver Liquid Eyeliner could instantly add some glamour to your daytime makeup if you're going straight from the office to a holiday party. It's chemical free but is quick drying and long lasting.

Hazelnut Pure Gloss is a warmer metallic in a sparkling nutmeg shade with a touch of copper. IT also has a touch of mint and ginger to plump the lips naturally.

Double Dazzle Dual Highlighter Pencil is a multitasking gold and copper highlighting pencil. Use it on cheekbones and brow bones or to line the eyes or lips.

Products & Services Going "Pink" In October

October is going pink once again as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each year it seems the attention is growing which is a promising sign. Almost everyone has either been affected directly or indirectly by this terrible disease which will strike one in eight women at some point in their lives. But the positive news is that the 5 year survival rate is ninety eight percent if the disease is caught early. Hopefully all of this focus will encourage women to be screened and hopefully all of the money raised will help fund research and eventually lead to a cure.

Quite a few beauty companies are offering limited edition products this month with a portion of the proceeds going various breast cancer charities and one local medspa is offering a special facial and event to highlight the cause.

Jane Iredale's PureMoist Lipcolour in Christina is named after Christina Applegate, the actress who is a breast cancer survivor. The price is $19 and $2 of each lipstick sold benefits Living Beyond Breast Cancer, with a minimum commitment of $25,000 in the coming year. The color looks good on just about everyone and comes packaged in a pretty, bright pink tube. It's also a state of the art liposome formula packs your lips with moisture, color and provides an SPF 15. Available at many local spas and cosmetic doctor's offices as well as at www.janeiredale.com.

Cosmetic company Estee Lauder is offering a Pink Ribbon Collection featuring a pin, compact and
the Elizabeth Hurley Lip Collection. Included are a lipstick, gloss, blush and pink case with a mirror. There are two versions--one is a more muted shade of rose and the other is a brighter shade of pink. The sets are $22.00 and are available at just about every major department store in the area.

Well known makup artist Sonia Kashuk who has created a line for Target is herself a breast cancer survivor and has found a beautiful way to raise funds and awareness. Her makeup brushes get great reviews and she and Target are offering her 4 piece BCRF Brush Up on Pink Purse Set with fifteen percent of the $12.99 price going to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Available at Target stores or at www.target.com.

One local medspa is also trying to give back in several ways. Radiance Medspa DC in Columbia Heights' Harmony Facial is dedicated to bringing skin back to life for women who are undergoing treatments like chemo or radiation. It can also work for anyone with senstive skin or other issues and $10 of each one purchased this month will go to Passionately Pink for the Cure (a Susan G. Komen charity). There will also be a free mineral makeup application with each treatment.

Radiance DC will wrap up this Breast Cancer Awareness Month on October 31st with their Cancer Care Event. The event will feature special product lines formulated to address the unique concerns for cancer patients including uneven complexion, acne, burns, chafing and scar tissue. www.radicancedc.com.
