Winter Beauty Strategies

Based on the weather so far this November and December we might be in for a frigid winter in the Washington area even if we don't get the "snowmeggedon" of last winter.

The freezing temps and cold wind takes it's toll on our skin, lips and hair and you might already be feeling like your skin is dry and flaky, your lips are parched and your hair is brittle and flyaway.

You'll probably have to step up your beauty routine and bring in the "big guns" so to speak to give them extra attention.

BeautyInDC.com has done the research for you and found the highest tech products to address the most basic problems we face this time of year.

If your skin is feeling irritated from the elements it might go against basic instincts to use an exfoliator because you might be afraid of causing more irritation. But any esthetician or skin pro will tell you that you need to remove the dead skin for your products to be more effective. And there are some exfoliators on the market that are more gentle but just as effective.

Kate Somerville is known for enhancing the skin of Hollywood's most famous actressses before walking the red carpet. But her products are available to anyone and her exoliants always get top reviews. For winter her ExfoliKate Gentle ($65) will leave the most sensitive or delicate skin refined and ready for hydration. The product even scored an Allure Beauty Editors 2010 Best of Beauty Award. Kate's Quench Hydrating Mask ($45) would be a perfect follow up treatment to give extra boost to skin that has been exposed to the harsh enviornment. They are available at www.katesomerville.com.

L'Occitane
is a brand known more for their soaps and scents and for their stores in the mall but they also feature a skin line. Their Ultra Rich Face Cream is just what it says--a dense and creamy formula that is rapidly absorbed and provides hydration for up to 24 hours. The price point is also reasonable at $38 and it is available at L'Occitane stores or at www.loccitane.com.

Our lips are extremely delicate under the best of circumstances but they are very hard to protect or cover up in winter. A simple lip balm in a stick may not be up to the task. And the same principle of exfoliation applies here too. The beauty of Ole Henriksen's African Red Tea Exfoliating Lip Salvation ($15) is that it multi-tasks to provide both of these treatments in one. Apparently red tea offers even more anti-oxidants than green or black tea so you're getting all of that protection as well as the hydrating properties of the product. You can find it at www.sephora.com.

Your hair may be reacting to the drastic change in temperatures from outside to inside and it might be static and flyaway in addition to being brittle. You'll need an intense mask or conditioning treatment to put the moisture back into your locks and prevent further damage Fekkai's Protein RX Reparative Treatment Mask ($29) is made for broken, brittle and weakened hair and would be a great weekly treatment to restore strengh and managablility to your hair. Find it at www.fekkai.com.

Wrap, Sauna and Glow at Pureskin, LLC

When I first visited Pureskin, LLC www.pureskingbethesda.com in Bethesda I was struck by the futuristic looking equipment in one of the tranquil treatment rooms. The name is also very exotic sounding --the Far Infrared SlimDome Sauna.

After speaking to owner Amy Boyce I know that this equipment may be the answer to the overeating, drinking and generally unhealthy things we may be doing during the holidays or have been doing all year long. SlimDome sauna is a very sophisticated method of deep detoxification for a wide array of conditions. It is helpful for clients dealing with mercury toxicity and post radiation issues to those just looking for improved health and well being. And with holiday parties upon us it might also be a way to relieve some bloating in time to look svelte in your little black dress. You can temporarily lose up to 5 percent of your body weight due to water loss.

And if all of that is not enough to get your attention Amy mentioned one more thing that is truly mind boggling--while you are lying in the SlimDome for your 40 minute treatment you will also be burning 600 calories....it's like a dream come true!

Many of Pureskin's clients do sign up for the treatments as a jump start to a weight loss program. It's also a perfect complement to the Endermologie treatments also offered at the spa. Endermologie which is the FDA approved method of reducing cellulite also stimulates the release of toxins so a session in the SlimDome immediately following will further facilitate that process.

With all of these benefits you might think a session would be quite pricey but the 40 minute sessions only cost $50. According to Amy, "everyone deserves the luxury of beauty and health treatments regardless of budget."

Another popular treatment offered by Pureskin are the Essential Oil Body Wraps. You'll be glowing in many ways after an hour and a half body treatment that offers a facial as a wonderful bonus!

Your treatment begins with a dry brush exfoliation, taking away all of the dead skin and stimulating the circulation. This is followed by a substantial massage rubbing in those 13 essential oils that include pine tree, lavender and geranium. You'll then be wrapped in layers of herbal cotton, chenille and a heated blanket and be "cocooned" for 40 minutes. And while the wrap is targeting the tissue on your body to firm your skin and relieve bloating, you'll receive a facial treatment. It could be an exfoliation with LED light therapy, facial Endermologie or another treatment based on your individual needs.

Amy says that this service is so well received that, "every person that has experienced it has returned for another treatment."

Again for such an extensive treatment, it is reasonably priced with the entire face and body treatment at $160 for the 90 minutes.

Pureskin is natural micro-spa offering non-surgical procedures in private and relaxing surroundings. Let someone know their treatments are on your wish list so they can purchase a package to put under the tree or give yourself a very nice pre-holiday gift!

A Glitzy Makeup Routine For The Holidays

Are you in the mood for some glitz and glamour? The holiday party season is the perfect time to dress up and show your sparkly alter ego. And your makeup should fit the look, so we went to the experts at Sephora to find out how to add some glitter to your face and skin.

Jeffrey English is a professional makeup artist whose creative use of color and technical skill have earned him a top spot on the elite Sephora 2010 PRO Beauty team.

Jeffrey shares his favorite products, tools and technique's with BeautyInDC.com readers who want to shine this season:

Q: What are some makeup trends for this winter and especially for the holidays?

A: This year we are noticing three key trends for the perfect holiday look. First, we have the sparkling lip. This involves taking any loose glitter (try Make Up For Ever Glitters; $13) and pressing it into a creamy lipstick or gloss for a great effect. Or, a simpler way to achieve this look would be to use a gorgeous, glittering gloss like the Sephora Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in 02 Reflex Frosty White ($14)

Next, we have the multicolored eye for holiday. I love using a variety of different textures and colors of eyeshadows to create a dramatic look. Palettes like the TARINA TARANTINO Jewel Box Palette ($78)) are a great way to experiment with new color combinations since they are comprised of a variety of harmonious colors and textures.

Lastly, the sultry, smoky eye is always a fantastic holiday look. Here you will see lots of deeper colors of layered eye shadows to create a well-blended, smoky effect. A great way to update the traditional smoky eye is to use more modern colors like purple.

Q: Can you suggest a few easy ways to transition your look from office to party?

A: My favorite way to upgrade your look from day to night is to put on a little glitz & glamour! I love to press on the TARINA TARANTINO Sparklicity Pure Gold ($19) on top of any eye look with a flat eyeshadow brush to draw instant attention to those gorgeous gazers! And it doesn’t stop there – the Sephora Glitter Spray ($10) is a shimmering spray for body and hair and will add a gorgeous sparkle to any holiday style. And if you want to add some sparkle all the way from your head to your toes, try the Sephora by OPI Top Coat in Flurry Up ($9) Another great way to transition from a day in the office to a night out on the town is to apply a set of fabulous false lashes. This will offer a dramatic look in a very subtle way.

Q: Are there ways to use glitter and sparkle in a way that’s not too obvious or overboard?

A: Absolutely. An amazing, yet subtle, way to integrate glitter into your beauty look is to merely apply a glitter liner right along the lower lash line and on the outer corner of the eye. This gives a twinkle to the eye in an understated way that will immediately make your eyes pop! Try the tokidoki Glitter Eyeliner Set ($25). A great PRO Artist tip is that if you ever want to remove any glitter or refine your sparkle, use a silicone based primer to pick it right up!

Q: Which products would achieve a holiday “glow” the best?

A: There are two ways to approach achieving a holiday “glow” – you can introduce a radiance boosting moisturizer into your daily skincare routine or applying bronzing and luminizing products into your makeup regimen. The Sephora Favorites Glitz & Glam Shimmer and Shine Makeup Deluxe Sampler ($39) has everything you need to add a little luminosity to your skin. This dazzling makeup collection includes 11 popular bronze colors and complexion-illuminating products like the NARS Orgasm Illuminator and Josie Maran Bronzing Argan Oil. By applying a luminizer to the top of your cheek bone you generate a lot of dimension and draw even more attention to the gorgeous eye area.

All products mentioned are available at www.sephora.com or may be available at your local Sephora store.

New Face Creams Up The Ante On Results

Most creams these days are multi-tasking and not only address wrinkles but also treat aging skin issues like texture, hyper pigmentation and sagging. They come in a wide range of price points depending on whether you are buying them in the drugstore, department store or from your dermatologist. Some of the key ingredients you’ll want to look for are retinol, Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides and hydroxy acids. BeautyInDC.com found some of the newest and most effective creams on the market if you’re looking for youth in a jar!

Least Expensive

One of the reviews for this first product said “bye bye Crème de la Mer” which goes for about forty times the price of St. Ive’s Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer. At $5.99 a jar it offers collagen and elastin proteins to smooth wrinkles and soften skin and is a great price point and something you would find at your local drug store.

You might forget about Avon since it’s mostly available through a consultant or online but their skin products are amazingly affordable and they are always coming out with new products. Their Anew Clinical Derma-Full Facial Filling Cream is called their first injectible grade facial filler in a cream and addresses some of the same issues that dermal filler injections correct like filling in facial contours and restoring fullness and they do it with Hyaluronic Acid. Cost is $34.00.

Mid-Range Price

Clinique i
s a department store brand that has a product with some amazing claims—they say at 12 weeks of use the anti wrinkle results of their Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle and UV Damage Corrector will be close to what you would see after a laser treatment at the dermatologist office. The ingredients include Vitamins C and E to fight free radicals and some collagen building peptides. Cost is about $44.00.

There are products called cosmeceuticals, a cosmetic product with implied pharmaceutical benefits and they are usually sold at dermatologist and plastic surgeon offices. NeoCutis is a popular brand and a product they introduced in July is part of a hot trend in face creams to create younger looking skin by diminishing dark spots from sun and age damage and improve the skin’s brightness. Most products do that with hydroquinone but they have a have a patent pending ingredient called Melaplex in their Perle Skin Brightening Cream. It costs about $95.00

Expensive

If it’s important to you to use natural or organic products and price isn’t really an object you might like this one from the Environ line. Ionzyme Focus Frown Serum uses a cocktail of peptides to soften muscle activity around the forehead and eyes that are the same ones targeted by Botox injections. Although it’s close to $200.00 price tag isn’t cheap it’s supposed to show significant results in 3 weeks and is still cheaper than Botox!

The dermatologists who created the wildly popular Proactiv acne products have turned their attention to anti-aging and on October 1st launched what they are calling a revolutionary anti-aging system. Rodan + Fields newest product is AMP MD. You use their micro-channeling tool with acupuncture micro-needles which safely creates precise micro-channels in the uppermost layers of the skin to allow for more effective delivery of their ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum. Cost of the part system for 60 day supply is $200.00.

Getting In Balance With Thai Massage

Massages are such a great way to relax and unwind. But they also offer many other benefits depending on the type of massage you receive. Swedish, deep-tissue and hot stone massages seem to be the most common on a spa's menu of services. But sometimes you can find other types of massage that are more unique and and fit your particular lifestyle and level of activity.

Qi Spa www.qispa.com in Georgetown is known for their Thai massage which fits very well with the spa's Asian name and philosophy. Qi is an ancient Chinese word for life force and energy in our body. When our Qi is in balance, we are relaxed and at our best. Thai massage is a very healing massage that can put you on a journey to better health for your mind and body. Bee is the massage therapist who practices this technique and explains how it works to BeautyInDC.com readers.

Q: Bee what type of training have you had as a massage therapist specializing in Thai massage?

A: My training has been in Thailand at the Wat Po Traditional Medical School ( Basic Thai massage ). In addition I took a Healing Thai massage course for the people who have had strokes. I was certified as a Thai Massage instructor from the Thai Traditional Medical Services Society in 2006 and took courses in Advanced Thai Medical massage therapy from The Wat Po Traditional Medical School in 2008.

Q: How does Thai massage differ from Swedish and other types of massage?

A: Thai massage is very different from other types of massage. It is done on a soft thick mat on the floor. The client is wearing loose fisherman pants and a loose top. It can be done with or without oil. I work on the body's pressure point and meridian line, stretching the whole body, similar to yoga.

Q: What are some of the benefits?

A: Blood circulation will be better making your body more flexible. Your body and mind will be balanced and muscle pain will be released. It improves bad posture from sitting too long and standing too long. People with cancer , diabetes and heart problems are recommended to see a doctor before getting the massage.

Q: What kind of feedback do you get from your clients?

A: After getting Thai massage for the first session most clients have some soreness from the massage but not everyone will be sore. It depends on the condition of clients. A few days after getting a Thai massage they will know that many things in the body have changed for the better than before getting Thai massage and they keep coming back to get a regular Thai massage once a month.

Q: How often should you get a Thai massage to optimize the benefits?

A: That depends on the condition of the client. For serious tension and a very tight body it's recommended to get a Thai massage weekly or a minimum of twice a month. Obviously you will benefit most by getting the massage regularly and at the very least should try to have monthly sessions of either 60 or 90 minutes.

Rolling With The Newest Antiaging Device

One of the problems that we've always heard about skincare products is that no matter how good the ingredients or expensive the product, if it can't penetrate the outer layers of the skin it won't be able to do much in the way of correcting the damage.

Rodan + Fields Dermatologists have now risen to the challenge of getting below the skin's surface with a new tool that can deliver active ingredients where they're needed. Their patent pending Anti-Age AMP MD Maximum Delivery system is on the market and available to consumers.

The tool itself, called the AMP MD, is a reusable blue roller type device constructed of surgical grade, stainless steel acupuncture micro-needles. When gently rolled over the face and neck, it safely creates precise micro-channels in the uppermost layers of the skin, allowing for deeper and more effective delivery of ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum’s skin-transforming ingredients. The company says the device is easy and painless, and you should be able to get results in just a minute a day of using their system.

Rodan + Fields suggests cleansing your skin with with their Anti-Age Daily Cleansing Mask followed by their Anti-Age Pore Minimizing Toner. Then you're ready to roll! Divide face into sections (forehead, right side, left side, chin, neck) and with moderate and comfortable pressure, roll AMP MD over the entire face and neck 4-10 times, changing directions with each pass.

After rolling, apply contents of one ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum Capsule to entire face and neck, and follow with ANTI-AGE Overnight Restorative Cream to help fortify the skin’s protective barrier.

After clinical trials the company's website says that with regular use of the ANTI-AGE Regimen and AMP MD Maximum Delivery System, your skin will become smoother and softer, changes often experienced after the first use. Within two months, your skin will appear firmer, lines and wrinkles will be less noticeable, pores will look tighter, and your complexion will become more luminous and refined. The pictures to the left with before (top) and after (bottom) show results on forehead, eye and mouth area.

One user said: "On day 11 of using the Rodan + Fields AMP MD Maximum Delivery System, I had three people tell me that I look like I'm 29 or 30. Since I'm 40, that's pretty incredible!"

The price of the system will range from $200 to $334 depending on the kit you choose and the number of products that are included. You can get a ten percent discount by becoming a Rodan + Fields Prefferred Customer and you can buy your products from a local Executive Consultant at https://cpadgerson.myrandf.com.

When Do You Become "Formerly Hot?"

It hit Stephanie Dolgoff at some point that she was no longer the young, desirable chick she had always been. This shocking revelation led to humorous observations on her blog www.formerlyhot.com about aging, body image and beauty.

The blog has now evolved into a book, Formerly Hot, Dispatches From Just the Other Side of Young that is now in book stores and on Amazon.com.

She was recently interviewed by BeautyInDC.com about her book and musings on her favorite subjects:

Q: Stephanie can you tell us about your background and how you became a writer?

A: I've been writing ever since my last month of college. I'd never written more than a term paper, but I was so frustrated by the pressure I felt to figure out what I was going to be for the rest of my life that I just sat down and ranted on paper about "shoulds," self-imposed and otherwise, and after that you couldn't stop me from writing. I worked at various magazines as an assistant and wrote and edited, and that's what I've been doing for the past 20 years. Wow. Weird to say "past 20 years" and have it not feel like that long, but there you have it. I'm one of those people who loves to write--it's not hard for me. It's hard for me not to.

Q: How would you describe your book Formerly Hot?

A: The book is all about what happened when I realized I wasn't a young woman anymore, moved without my permission into a new category of human being, and all that I've come to realize since then. It covers all aspects of a woman's life--friends, marriage, work, health, marriage, pop culture. It's humorous essays.

The inspiration came from simply feeling like I wasn't myself, that something had changed, and I couldn't put my finger on what it was. I had everything I wanted (good job, two beautiful girls, a husband, friends, health, etc.) but something felt unsettled. I was in my late 30s, and decided it was because I was aging--I wasn't perceived as "the hot chick" anymore, as I had been, for better or worse (mostly better) my whole life. So I jokingly started my blog, http://www.formerlyhot.com. I didn't know what I was, but I knew what I wasn't: hot, in that first-glance, young-woman kind of way.

Quickly, though, it became clear that it wasn't about looks at all, but about slipping into this new category of woman--the not-young woman--and that my self-definition had a bit of catching up to do. What I learned through the blog and writing the book, though, is that life on this side of young is far more fulfilling and enjoyable than back when I was "hot" in the way most people use the word. Being an adult tween (not young, not old) can be awkward at times. But I wouldn't trade where I am now to be a young woman again for anything.

Q: What feedback have you gotten from people who have read the book?

A: The most common thing I hear is, "Thanks for voicing what was in my head--I thought I was the only one." I also hear a lot of "Thanks for helping me laugh at myself and getting older." That's extremely gratifying. Women are taught to fear getting older, and what I hope my book does is helps them see that they don't have to. There's some loss that comes with not being young anymore, of course. But there's so much more to be gained. That's what the book is about.

Q: You write a lot about body image--what words of encouragement can you offer to a woman who is struggling with their body size or shape?

A: There are a lot of people who stand to make a lot of money by telling you that you're not OK the way you are. I had an eating disorder when I was young and have always had issues with my weight, even when it was perfectly fine. What I've learned that works for me is to eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full, and to try to be as healthy as I can. The weight my body settles at when I do that is what it should be. It may not be what I want it to be, but it's what it should be, and accepting that has made life a lot easier.

If you're heavy and worried about your health, by all means, do what it takes to get healthy. That's worth your energy. And if you think a little bit of this or that will help you feel prettier, why not avail yourself of it. But for the most part, I'd look for evidence in the mirror and from those who love you of what is beautiful about you, rather than focus on what you don't think is. It's not easy to deprogram yourself to think that way, but it can be done.

New Location and Services for Body Elements!

There are a lot of smooth and toned bodies walking around the DC area courtesy of Body Elements www.body-elements.com.

They've offered their non-invasive Endermologie treatments in Northern Virginia for over 7 years now. Not only does this FDA approved treatment contribute to a loss or reduction in cellulite, it is known to improve circulation and metabolism, stimulate the lymphatic system and treat sore muscles.

In recent years Body Elements has upped the ante with an improved technology called Lipomassage by Endermologie which is a highly targeted treatment that can attack fat reserves in the body for faster and longer lasting results.

Just a few weeks ago they moved a few blocks from their former location on Gallows Road to an expanded facility at 8230 Old Courthouse Road, Suite 100.

One thing that hasn't changed is the passion and dedication of Body Elements founder and President, Eva Swersey. As she commented on the move, "There is nothing more rewarding for us than to support and cheer our clients on as they reach for their goals and better yet to watch their reactions to the visible results they've achieved. It's truly a beautiful thing!

As the pictures reveal, you'll receive your treatments in a tranquil space done in pale lavender tones. Having had Lipomassage by Endermologie treatments myself I can attest to the fact that you will look forward to the relaxation and massaging benefits of the treatments while you lose the inches. It's not often that something that provides such noticeable results also feels so good.

And with the expanded facility comes expanded services that all fit together to offer a comprehensive program of nutrition, weight loss, body sculpting and excercise.

If you've always wanted to lose weight and improve your body's shape but you're overwhelmed by all of the options out there, having a consultation with one of Body Elements trained staff can point you in the right direction and help you start reaching your goals.

In addition to Lipomassage by Endermologie, Body Elements also offers a high quality line of products called Isagenix for cleansing and nutrition. It's a way to improve your health and well being from the inside while you're working on your outside appearance.

And there's one more component that is important to this process and is now offered at Body Elements and that is an exercise program.

Joining them in their new location is personal trainer Damien Woodson of the Personal Training Co. www.personaltrainingco.com. Damien's approach is a customized program of functional training that suits your busy schedule by providing optimal results in a shorter period of time. He'll help you improve your strength, power and flexibility and capitalize on the fat burning you've started with Endermologie and Isagenix.

You have an opportunity to see everything Body Elements has to offer at their open house taking place on Wednesday, August 18th. You can meet Eva, Damien and all of the staff as well as try samples of Isagenix products and their training program.

The event is from 11am to 1:30pm with a chance to win a free Lipomassage by Endermologie 45 minute treatment valued at $150.

If you can't stop by Wednesday, make your appointment soon to find out what Body Elements can do to put you on the path to well being inside and out. And stay tuned for information about their big anniversary bash coming in September!

And check out the treatment specials on BeautyInDC.com in the Hot Deals section for up to $2000 savings on packages.

A Beauty Line's Approach to Making Life Beautiful

Launched just a little over a year ago, Apriori Beauty takes a different approach to anti-aging. They distinguish themselves from so many other products on the market with a comprehensive approach to that offers more than just fixing lines and wrinkles.

Apriori Beauty Consultant Suzanne Rogelstad http://www.useloveshare.com/IC/bellabody explained the company's philosphy and products for a variety of skin conditions in this BeautyInDC.com interview:

Q: How did the Apriori beauty line come about?

A: Candace Keefe was a key factor in the creation of anti-aging products that were unparalleled in the marketplace ... until today. Apriori Beauty launched in June 2009 with her next generation of products that are guaranteed to turn anti-aging upside down, and inside out.
Everyone ages, it's a fact of life. But, everyone doesn't have to look their age! Most anti-aging solutions treat the symptoms of aging as opposed to keeping the visual signs from ever occurring. Apriori Beauty focused on Nutrigenomics — the molecular relationship between nutrition and the response of genes — to create the first ever, internal + external, preventative approach to aging. Plus, each product is power-packed with performance to reduce the visible signs of aging.

Q: What are some of your most popular anti-aging products?

A: Apriori has so many great anti-aging products but the two most popular and effective products are The Derma Firm Illuminator + the Precision Skin Rejuvnating Lotion and the Sugar Beet Crystal + Papaya Enzyme Microscrub is very popular!

Q: If someone has limited time for skin care what would you suggest they use?

A: Even if you have limited time to spend on a skin care you should really use the whole Celloxylin daily skin care regimen. You can do the first three steps in the shower and then the last two when you get out. It really is about two to three minutes in the morning and the same in the evening.

Q: Beyond anti-aging what other skin issues does Apriori Beauty address with their product line?

A: Apriori has products to address different issues like sensitive skin, hyperpigmentation and dry skin.

Sensitive skin: AB Celloxylin daily skin care regimen is without the acids that other products have. Acids are used in our Celloyxlin MD 20Ex peel to give a wonderful exfoliation experience, saving your daily skin care for feeding/nourishing and hydrating your skin.
Hyperpigmentation: Precision Skin Rejuvnating Lotion + Derma Firm Illuminator - PSRL has a very high concentration of the Nutrient Reservoir and the DFI's galvanic application acts to increase absorption of these nutrients, removing impurities, while the Far Infrared Light is a thermal therapy which increases circulation and energizes your skin cells deep in your tissue - helps with skin rejuvenation and increase production of your own collagen and elasting, helps with scar healing. The ultrasound and vibration improves circulation and aids with age spot diminishing.

Dry Skin: AB's products focus on hydrating and nourishing without the acids and other ingredients that dry out the skin and cause you to feel dry and tight, leaving your skin feeling supple, vibrant and hydrated all day long. AB's night creme moisturizes 3 layer deep while you sleep.

Also in the near future Apriori's Celloxylin MD line will feature products that will address under eye dark circles and hyperpigmentation

Q: I understand Apriori Beauty also has products that address beauty from the inside out--can you tell us about some of those?

A: Life-years ahead of common super-antioxidant juice blends, Lifeoxylin Cellular Defense Elixir delivers internally via the Nutrient Reservoir™ a unique combination of ingredients that support the four core influences of aging, including:

Super antioxidants to protect against oxidative stress

Endocrine system modulators to protect against system imbalances as we age

Energy activators supporting mitochondrial efficiency

Longevity gene support to help prolong the life of healthy cells

This comprehensive nutritional supplement focuses on Nutrigenomics — the molecular relationship between nutrition and the response of genes — to create a preventative approach to aging. Cells are nourished and protected from this proprietary fruit, vegetable and exotic plant blend offering an unprecedented ORAC value, zero artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners.

Quick Fixes for Summer Beauty Disasters

If you're skin or hair is suffering from overexposure to heat and sun, or your self tanning went terribly wrong there are products on the market that can provide a quick and easy fix.

You may be too busy to research among the thousands of products out there to find just the right one to correct your problem. So BeautyInDC.com has zeroed in on some specialized products that address the most common summer beauty blunders.

A beauty ingredient that is getting a lot of attention recently is argan oil from trees found in Morocco. It's supposed to be a wonder ingredient that can help hair, skin and nails. Kiehls has included argan in their Superbly Smoothing Argan Conditioner which will turn your dry, unruly hair into a smooth mane. The product sells at Kiehls and other stores for $19.

If you were going for a bronze facial glow but ended up with damaged skin instead, Clinique's Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle & UV Damage Corrector is a specifically formulated collagen-boosting, anti-oxidant-rich serum you apply twice a day to prevent the lines and wrinkles that can result. Available at department or beauty stores or online at www.clinique.com it sells for $44.50.

Our bodies can also end up red and dehydrated in the summer sun and not only does it look unnattractive but the bumps and itchiness can be pretty uncomfortable. To soothe the discomfort and replenish the moisture you can find a relatively inexpensive product in the drug store aisles by Aquaphor. Their Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment provides relief for dry, cracked and irritated skin including burns. And at a price tag of $15.99 for a 14 oz jar it's a good deal and available at most drug stores.

Even if you're avoiding the sun and going the self-tanning route you can end up with streaks and splotches that you would rather not have to live with until they fade away. To speed up the process you can use a product by Model Co that is specially formulated to dissolve self tanning blunders. The name says it all--Tan Remover Exfoliating Scrub! It's micro salt particles will dissolve the streaks or orange spots in minutes and leave your skin soft to boot. The product is $29.95 and is available at Sephora and other beauty product stores.

And one last product to rescue you from what might be one of the most dreaded of all the beauty disasters which is the one where you decided to color your own hair and are horrified by the outcome. Color Oops removed all permanent or semi-permanent hair color and is amonia/bleach free so it's not adding extra damage to your hair. And you can re-color the same day, and hopefully with an improved outcome the second time around! CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid carry a regular or extra strength version and it sells for between $7.99 and $10.99.

Three Cheers For The Perfect Tan!

After a trip to the beach where I overdid the sun and have the bumps to prove it, I'm more aware than ever that too much sun just isn't healthy or attractive. And of course we've been hearing plenty of news about the dangers of tanning beds. So it seems that self tanners are the way to go even though we have probably all had our issues with applying them or getting uneven results.

Let's hear a big cheer for a product that seems to solve those problems and leaves our skin healthy, glowing and youthful!

Abby Dymond who is a Washington Redskins Cheerleader promotes a tanning system called Sunbrushed Glow that is virtually fail proof, safe and easy. And the way she became involved is an interesting story in itself. Abby was inspired to jon the Sunbrush Organization through her participation in a "Sun safe" outreach project on behalf of the Melanoma Foundation and Sunbrushed, a sponsor of the cheerleaders. Along with her teammate, Ms. Maryland 2006, Brittany Lietz Cicala, a melanoma survivor and Sunbrushed user, she helped educate our youth on the importance of sunscreen and the dangers of tanning beds. She continues this outreach through Sunbrushed Glow, LLC’s www.sunbrushedglow.com professional revolutionary product while promoting the important message of sun safety.

Q: Abby tell us what your product, Sunbrushed Glow does?

A: Sunbrushed is a self-applied tanning system equal to a professional salon spray tan that is easily applied in 5 minutes. With this “sun safe” product you simply wash your skin’s surface using the tanning solution with a special micro-fiber washcloth. The bronzed tan result is immediate and during at least a five-hour waiting period your golden tan will continue to darken. Your result will be a Sunbrushed glow...
www.sunbrushedglow.com

With a Sunbrushed Multi-tan kit you can apply 6 to 8 full body tans. Included in the Multi-tan kit is everything you need for an application of Sunbrushed: tanning formula, micro-fiber cloth, after care lotion, exfoliant, gloves and a hair tie. A Sunbrushed tan can last 3-10 days. The tan is different for everyone. It depends on your skin type, how you naturally exfoliate, and how you care for your skin following the tanning session.

Q: How do you apply it?

A: Application is so easy. The entire process takes no more than 10 minutes. Put on the gloves provided, tie up your hair with the hair-tie in the kit and pour the Sunbrushed solution into a clean bowl. Soak the micro-fiber cloth in the solution until it is saturated completely and then squeeze out excess solution so that the cloth is damp, not dripping wet. Then simply wash on Sunbrushed all over your body like you would wash yourself with a washcloth. Go over hands lightly by pulling back the top of the glove and feet lightly.

A bronzed tan effect is immediate so you will be able to see exactly where you’re applying the product. When you’re finished, pour the solution from the bowl into the Sunbrushed container and put the cloth in the container and close it. This is how Sunbrushed is stored until your next use. Wait a few minuets to dry before putting on clothing and be sure not to get wet or sweat excessively during this time.

After a period of 6-8 hours take a shower and you will be left with a Sunbrushed glow. The kit provides after care lotion and moisturizing exfoliant to use before you tan to even out blotchy skin or after a few days to scrub off excess product.

Sunbrushed is great because you can apply the product and go about your day. You won’t look “muddy or dirty” like most products look when applied and Sunbrushed smells good so no one will notice you’re wearing it – Sunbrushed has a pleasant almond scent. Most people say it smells more like sunscreen, not self-tanner.

Q: What are the advantages of using this product as opposed to getting regular sun or going to a tanning salon?

A: Healthy, youthful skin.

With Sunbrushed you can achieve a SAFE and healthy tan without damaging your skin. The Sunbrushed method is the only FDA-approved safe way to tan.

The American Academy of Dermatology states there is no safe tan from a tanning bed. There is compelling and irrefutable scientific evidence tanning beds that emit ultraviolet radiation cause skin cancer - including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The FDA also advises avoiding an all over spray or mist that is difficult to avoid exposure in a manner for which it is not approved, including exposure in the area of the eyes, lips, mucous membrane or internally. The Sunbrushed wash-on formula is safe!

There are many more advantages to using Sunbrushed besides caring for the health of your skin. The Sunbrushed wash-on method virtually eliminates most problems associated with self-tanners.

A Sunbrushed Glow gives you:

· No orange color
· No blotching or streaking
· No offensive odor
· No complicated application process
· A convenient process
· Relief from having to hold your breath during application
· Privacy to apply the product in your own home
· A Sunbrushed tan is a fraction of the cost of salon spray tans and gives the same professional result.

Q: What has been the reaction from users of the product?

A: The reaction I get from first time users is overly positive and thankful! Users finally feel they have a professional, easy solution to sunbathing and a professional sun safe tanning option. Many Sunbrushed users stop using tanning beds completely. They are more aware of the risks of tanning, so they use sunscreen more often. They also don’t waste time and money on spray tans. Sunbrushed users are loyal, happy tanners. Many people can often be heard saying – “Sunbrushed for life!”

A Doctor With an Eye 4 Beauty

One of the main complaints from men and women as they hit the 40's and beyond is that they look tired no matter how much sleep they manage to get. Many times it's the lines, wrinkles and gravity that contribute to this feeling that we don't look as young or energetic as we might feel.

And one of the first areas to show age can be the eyes either on the upper lid,the lower lid or both.

A friend showed up at a restaurant recently and although we couldn't put our finger on what was different about her she seemed to look refreshed and like she had just come back from a vacation. As it turns out she had just gotten her eyes "done," the simple way of saying she just had an Upper Blepharoplasty.

One of the premiere cosmetic surgeons in our area for performing eye surgery is Dr. Soheila Rostami of Oculo Facial Plastics Consultants in Reston, VA. Dr. Rostami is a board -certified surgeon specializing in lacrimal, orbital and reconstructive eyelid surgery.

Dr. Rostami was gracious enough to share her expertise with BeautyInDC.com readers and answer our questions on eyelid rejuvenation.

Q: Dr. Rostami it seems that one of the first places that shows our age is our eyes. What are the most popular procedures you perform to rejuvenate them?

A: Upper blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery) is one of those procedures that can help us appear more youthful, because the excess skin and fat are removed from the upper eyelids, which helps to restore the look we had when we were younger.

Also popular are (1) lower blepharoplasty (under eye surgery) to reduce sagging skin and puffiness caused by herniated fat under the eyes; (2) brow lifts to pull-up the forehead muscle and put the eyebrows back in the position you had when younger; and (3) sometimes ptosis (droopy eyelid) repair with a technique called a levator advancement, where the eyelid muscles are tightened with sutures.

Q: Who is a good candidate for one of these procedures?

A: Anyone, male or female, who has excess upper or lower eyelid skin or bagginess. Sometimes, this skin hangs down on the eyelids and interferes with one’s peripheral vision. We often hear from patients that their eyelids are too heavy, and they must use their forehead muscles to hold their eyelids up. By the end of the day, they use their fingers to hold open their eyelids and let their forehead muscles relax. When they do this, they feel a great sense of relief.

Q: Could you describe what you do during an Upper Blepharoplasty?

A: This is a procedure that is easily performed in-office using a local anesthetic. This is an over-simplified explanation, but here are the basic steps. First, the excess eyelid skin that needs to be removed is carefully measured and marked. This is an important step, because if not enough skin is removed, you won’t be happy, and if too much skin is removed, it can cause functional eyelid problems. The eyelid area is numbed with a local injection and then swabbed with an antiseptic. An incision is made with a surgical blade along your natural eyelid crease, and then the excess skin and fat are removed. The incision is then closed with sutures. An ointment is applied to the suture line for the next few days. Ice packs are also encouraged to be used off and on for at least a day. Sutures are removed 7 days later.

Q: What about a Lower Blepharoplasty?

A: Because there is more discomfort associated with the lower blepharoplasty, I recommend that this procedure be done in an outpatient surgery center under IV sedation. There are two ways of doing lower blepharoplasty, and it all depends on whether or not there is a lot of excess skin. If there is puffiness from herniated fat, an incision is made from the inside of the bottom eyelid and the fat is removed. If there is sagging excess skin as well as herniated fat, an incision is made along the lower lash line, the fat and excess skin is removed, and then the area is sutured back together.

Q: Is there a long recovery time from these procedures?

A: The eye area is very vascular, meaning that there are many blood vessels in the area, so it is normal to experience bruising and swelling after surgery. Healing is very individualized – how fast you heal depends on your general health and how your body usually heals. Generally, you can expect to resume light activities in about 1-2 weeks after surgery, which means no heavy lifting and no vigorous exercise during the recovery time.

Q: Are there any risks involved?

A: All surgical procedures involve risk. As my patient, I want you to fully understand all the risks associated with these procedures, so that you can make an informed decision. There are healing symptoms like swelling and bruising, discomfort and pain, and itching and scar redness which are normal to experience. Other risks include bleeding, inflammation, infection, wound separation, etc., which are dealt with quickly to resolve. Some of the most serious complications are also extremely rare. These include allergic reactions, blindness and loss of life. I discuss these risks with my patients in detail during their consultation.

Q: Are your patients usually pleased with the results?

A: My patients and I both are usually pleased with the surgical results, as I have been doing these procedures for several years and consider myself skilled in what I do. I receive letters from them, telling me how much their appearance has improved and their outlook has changed. For some, the surgery is more about function – their peripheral vision is improved, their eyes are no longer tired and irritated, and they no longer have to hold up their eyelids with their forehead muscles. Others tell me they receive many compliments on the color of their eyes, which haven’t changed, but are now much more noticeable to others!

Q: What is the cost involved and does insurance cover any of these procedures?

A: On my website, www.Beauty4Eye.com, I have posted costs under the “Services” tab – the last item in the left hand column, called “Pricing/Menu.” For my self-pay patients, I try to be fair and make my fees reasonable, especially when combining procedures.

Upper blepharoplasty, levator advancement for ptosis repair, and/or eyebrow lifts are sometimes covered by insurance companies. In order for these procedures to be covered by your insurance plan, medical necessity must be proven through clinical notes, photographs, and visual field tests (which shows how badly your upper eyelids are affecting your field of vision). These items are sent in advance to your insurance provider to see if they will cover the procedures. Lower blepharoplasty is not a covered procedure by insurance; it is strictly cosmetic.
